Box Score Nicole Karas, Lauren Lee and Nicole Sparks served three aces apiece as Mount Olive extended its winning streak to four with a 25-16, 25-14, 25-23 victory over previously unbeaten Chowan in non-conference women's volleyball Wednesday at Murfreesboro, N.C. Carly White led a balanced attack with 10 kills and the Trojans recorded a season-high .325 team hitting percentage.
Mount Olive (4-7) used a 12-2 run in the first set to turn a 10-10 tie into a double-digit advantage. Karas' ace highlighted her five-point service run to help the Trojans take the opening set.
Aces by Lee and Sparks helped stake Mount Olive to a 7-2 lead in the second set. Montgomery Register and Alysha Tyms-Burnett each had a pair of kills during a Trojan run to put the margin at double figures in 23-11. Tyms-Burnett's kill on set point gave Mount Olive a two-set lead.
Mount Olive built a 17-9 in the third set after Lee's ace, then had to withstand a furious Chowan rally. Kills by Brianna Smith and Kelsey Schlake pulled the Hawks (6-1) within 23-22. Sarah Robertson's kill gave Mount Olive a match point opportunity and after a kill by Jordan Miller kept Chowan in the contest, a Hawk attack error sealed the win for the Trojans.
Tyms-Burnett tallied nine kills and no errors in 17 attempts for a .529 hitting percentage, while Lee added eight kills. Karas finished with 32 assists, Sparks had 11 digs and Charnel Austin added two aces to give Mount Olive 12 aces for the match. The Trojans have reached double figures in aces in three of their last four matches.
Churaya Chase led all players with 11 kills for Chowan, while Schlake shared match-high honors with three service aces.
Mount Olive resumes Conference Carolinas action this weekend with a pair of matches in Upstate South Carolina. The Trojans travel to Spartanburg, S.C., Friday for a 7 p.m. match against Converse, then head to Easley, S.C., Saturday to take on Limestone. Match time is 1 p.m.
