Box Score A double block by Nicole Karas and Sarah Watkins on match point sealed the win and kept Mount Olive unbeaten in conference play as the Trojans defeated Erskine 25-18, 21-25, 25-23, 26-24 in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Saturday at Kornegay Arena. Carly White led all players with 18 kills as the Trojans withstood a 17-minute delay and a point taken away in the second set to extend their winning streak to three.
Karas tallied 44 assists and 19 digs to go with two blocks. Lauren Lee, Alysha Tyms-Burnett and Watkins had nine kills apiece for the Trojans.
Mount Olive (3-7 overall, 2-0 Conference Carolinas) won the opening set and appeared to have tied the second set 22-22 after Erskine was called for having served out of rotation. Officials and coaches conferred and the top official even requested the statistics program play-by-play. Officials eventually called a play-over and the set was restarted with Erskine serving with a 22-21 lead.
Erskine (1-5, 0-2) went on to win the next three points as Marissa Greenough sandwiched a block and a kill around a back row kill by libero Anna Butrym to even the match at a set apiece.
The Flying Fleet carried their momentum into the third set, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Mount Olive capitalized on three consecutive Erskine errors to tie the set and Watkins' block and kill completed a five-point run to give the Trojans the lead.
The set saw nine more ties before a kill and a block by White broke a 19-19 tie and put the Trojans ahead to stay. White recorded a kill in the middle on set point.
Mount Olive trailed 24-23 in the fourth set, but saved a set point on an Erskine service error. Lee's kill on the left side put the Trojans on top 25-24. Tyms-Burnett's serve forced Erskine into a difficult attack attempt at the net and Karas and Watkins put the ball down from the right side to clinch the win.
In the first set, Lee's ace and three kills and a block by White highlighted a Trojan run that turned into a 20-12 lead for Mount Olive. Lee finished the set with kills on the final two points, tipping the ball onto an open spot in the middle of the Erskine floor to give the Trojans the opening set.
The Trojans tallied a season-high 72 digs as Nicole Sparks with 13 digs and Lee and Tyms-Burnett with 11 apiece joined Karas in double figures in digs.
Allie Evans notched a double-double for Erskine with 11 kills and 12 digs to go with a match-high four aces. Butrym finished with 21 digs for the Flying Fleet.
Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans travel to Murfreesboro, N.C., to take on Chowan in a non-conference match-up. Match time is 6 p.m.
