Box Score Carly White recorded a career-high 22 kills and Clara Ervin came off the bench to contribute five service points in the fifth set as Mount Olive survived a North Greenville rally for a 26-24, 25-19, 13-25, 20-25, 15-9 victory in the two teams' Conference Carolinas women's volleyball opener Friday at Kornegay Arena. A pair of Trojan freshman recorded career highs as Montgomery Register tallied eight blocks and Alysha Tyms-Burnett had 10 kills and four aces. The win was the Trojans' second straight in a span of three days.
Ervin did not play in any of the first four sets, but served to open the fifth set and combined with White to help stake Mount Olive (2-7 overall, 1-0 Conference Carolinas) to the first three points of the set. White sandwiched a kill and a block around an Ervin ace, and kills by White and Tyms-Burnett helped spark the Trojans to a 7-2 lead. The margin never fell below three points as Register assisted on blocks on back-to-back points to extend Mount Olive's lead to 11-5.
Ervin returned with the Trojans leading 12-8 and won two more service points to set up match point. After a North Greenville side out, White put home a kill to seal the win. White came within a kill of matching her career high.
In the opening set, White had three kills and Nicole Karas added a service ace during a 5-0 run to rally Mount Olive from a 19-16 deficit. North Greenville fought off one set point, but Tyms-Burnett's kill broke a 24-24 tie and Register combined with Lauren Lee on a block to give the Trojans the first set.
Mount Olive saw an early five-point lead in the second set disappear before Tyms-Burnett helped the Trojans close out the set. Tyms-Burnett served two aces in the final three points, including an ace on set point to give Mount Olive a two-set lead.
North Greenville (1-9, 0-1) dominated the third set as aces by Ashlyn Wilkinson and Codiann Amis helped the Crusaders build a 17-6 advantage. The margin fell below double digits only once the remainder of the set and Elizabeth James recorded a kill on set point to keep North Greenville in the match.
The fourth set saw 10 ties and five lead changes before Yomi Adeyey's kill broke a 13-13 tie and gave North Greenville the lead for good. Mount Olive cut a six-point deficit down to two before the Crusaders capitalized on Trojan attack errors on the final two points to send the match to a fifth set.
Karas finished with a season-high 46 assists to go with 11 digs, three aces and a career-high five blocks. Karas has 11 aces in her last two matches. Charnel Austin added three aces as Mount Olive recorded 14 aces as a team. The Trojans also had 10 total team blocks. Nicole Sparks led all players with 20 digs.
North Greenville was led by James, who played both setter and hitter. James finished with 13 kills and 26 assists, and narrowly missed a triple-double with eight digs. Rachel Burts added 12 kills, while Haley Hester served three aces.
Mount Olive concludes its weekend homestand Saturday as the Trojans play host to Erskine in Conference Carolinas action. Match time is 2 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
