Late Goal Sends Trojans To 2-1 Loss At Catawba

Box Score

Freshman Alex Wetherholt's first-half goal gave Mount Olive an early lead, but Catawba scored the game-winning goal off a corner kick with less than two minutes left in regulation to hand the Trojans a 2-1 loss in non-conference women's soccer Wednesday at Salisbury, N.C. The goal was Wetherholt's second of the season.

Mount Olive (0-3-1) got on the scoreboard at the 14:03 mark as Wetherholt took a service from Ellie Barnes and gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead. Wetherholt's goal marked the second time she scored on the Trojans' initial shot of the match. She also scored on Mount Olive's first shot September 7 in the Trojans' 2-2 tie against Mars Hill. Barnes' assist was her first of the season.

The lead stood until the 38th minute when Alex Hulsey scored on an assist by Haley Allen as Catawba (2-2-1) and Mount Olive went into halftime tied 1-1. Wetherholt's goal was Mount Olive's lone shot of the half, while Catawba recorded nine shots in the first 45 minutes.

Mount Olive narrowly missed taking the lead in the 59th minute when Damilia Brooks' shot hit the post. Catawba goalkeeper Angela Pawlowski made all three of her saves in a span of 10 minutes late in the match to deny the Trojans a go-ahead goal. Pawlowski recorded a save on a shot by Lauren Power in the 78th minute, another save on Wetherholt's shot in the 84th minute and her final save on Barnes' shot in the 88th minute.

Trojan goalkeeper Stephanie McCoy recorded a save in the 81st minute and Mount Olive withstood a pair of ensuing corner kicks. But a Trojan foul helped lead to Catawba's 11th corner kick of the match and Emily Auwarter headed in Sophie Waller's service to give the Indians their first lead of the contest at the 88:16 mark. Mount Olive was unable to record another shot.

McCoy finished with four saves for Mount Olive in the freshman's first collegiate 90-minute match in goal. The Trojans were outshot 17-5.

Mount Olive is at home for a pair of matches this weekend at Amon Field. The Trojans open Conference Carolinas play Saturday at 1 p.m. against North Greenville, then play host to Lincoln (Pa.) in non-conference action Sunday at 2 p.m.
