Box Score Mount Olive fell behind three minutes into the contest and Wingate did all of its scoring in the first half to defeat the Trojans 3-0 in non-conference women's soccer Wednesday at Amon Field. The loss was the Trojans' first at home this season.
Prior to the start of the match, a moment of silence was observed in tribute of those affected by the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Mount Olive (0-2-1) nearly evened the score in the 12th minute when Damilia Brooks drilled a shot from right of the box, but Wingate goalkeeper Lauren Schoonover caught the ball cleanly for the save. Lauren Power, who had her first collegiate two-assist performance Saturday against Mars Hill, narrowly missed scoring five minutes into the second half when her 20-yard attempt from the left side went just inches above the top right corner of the goal.
Wingate (0-0-2) grabbed a lead it wouldn't relinquish at the 3:07 mark as Jade Montgomery carried the ball down the left side and crossed to Brooke Howell, who scored from eight yards out just inside the right post. Montgomery factored in all three Bulldog goals, adding a pair of unassisted goals. She beat the keeper on a breakaway and walked the ball in at 25:03 and captured a loose ball in the box at exactly 38:00.
The Trojans finished with six shots, while Wingate had 10 shots. Katie Batson played the first half in goal for Mount Olive and recorded one save. Kelsey Cirrito played the second half and finished with three saves. Schoonover tallied four saves in 61 minutes in goal for Wingate, while Carly Rives played the final 29 minutes for the Bulldogs.
Wednesday's loss ended Mount Olive's four-match unbeaten streak dating back to last season and including a 2-2 tie against Mars Hill in Saturday's home opener. Wingate's opening goal marked the first time Mount Olive trailed in a home match since September 26, 2012, against Queens, ending a streak of 389 consecutive minutes of being in the lead or tied at home.
Mount Olive is idle until next Wednesday when the Trojans travel to Salisbury, N.C., to take on Catawba in their third consecutive match against a South Atlantic Conference opponent. Match time is 5 p.m.
