Men's Soccer Falls To Top-Seeded Erskine 2-1 In Conference Carolinas Tournament

Box Score

J.P. Sonnendecker scored the tying goal early in the second half and Mount Olive played the final 28 minutes with a man advantage, but a penalty kick in the 82nd minute was the difference as the eighth-seeded Trojans fell to top-seeded Erskine 2-1 in the quarterfinal round of the 2013 Conference Carolinas Men's Soccer Tournament. The contest was a rematch of last year's quarterfinal.

After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Mount Olive (3-15-0) evened the match less than three minutes into the second half. Bright Eto played the ball to Sonnendecker, who scored from the top of the box to tie the contest 1-1 at the 47:51 mark.

The goal was the second in two matches for Sonnendecker, who scored the game winner in overtime Saturday against King to send the Trojans into the tournament. Eto also assisted on that goal.

In the 62nd minute, an Erskine player was issued a straight red card, giving Mount Olive a man advantage. In the two teams' regular season meeting, two Trojan players were sent off in the first half, giving the Flying Fleet a two-man advantage for the final eight minutes of the first half and all of the second half.

Mount Olive outshot Erskine 18-10 for the match, including a 6-2 advantage for the next 18 minutes after the red card. Flying Fleet goalkeeper Roberto De La Vina recorded four of his 13 saves during the stretch.

A Trojan foul in the box at 80:37 set up Erskine with a penalty kick opportunity. Jonathan Rutter converted to put the Flying Fleet back on top.

Mount Olive had a pair of corner kicks 19 seconds apart in the 85th minute, setting up a Sean Lockett shot attempt that was blocked. The Trojans nearly tied the match with 53 seconds left, but Sonnendecker's header was wide.

In last year's quarterfinal, Mount Olive battled Erskine through two overtimes before winning a penalty kick shootout to advance to the semifinal round. But the Trojans were unable to send Tuesday's contest into overtime.

Erskine (12-5-1) got on the scoreboard in the 16th minute on a goal by Ross Henderson. Mount Olive was held scoreless in the first half, despite an 8-4 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes.

Trojan goalkeeper Aleksandar Drobac finished with five saves, all in the second half.

Each team was whistled for six fouls in the first half, but the foul count was 9-0 against Mount Olive in the second half.

Mount Olive graduates two seniors from this year's squad - midfielder Tyler Vandevender and forward Josh Woodburn.
