OT Goal By JP Sonnendecker Sends Trojans Into Men's Soccer Conference Tournament

Box Score

Freshman J.P. Sonnendecker couldn't have picked a better time to score his first collegiate goal.

J.P. Sonnendecker's goal less than three minutes into overtime lifted Mount Olive to a 3-2 victory over King in Conference Carolinas men's soccer Saturday at Bristol, Tenn. The win, coupled with North Greenville's 4-2 loss to Belmont Abbey just moments earlier, sends the Trojans into next week's Conference Carolinas Men's Soccer Tournament.

Mount Olive will be the No. 8 seed and will travel to Due West, S.C., Tuesday to take on top-seeded Erskine in the quarterfinal round. Match time is 7 p.m.

Mount Olive (3-14-0 overall, 2-6-0 Conference Carolinas) saw a one-goal halftime lead disappear, then had to withstood a series of challenges late in the second half to send the match into overtime. King (4-10-2, 3-5-0) had two corner kicks and a long-range shot go just over the crossbar in the final 30 seconds of regulation.

Bright Eto, who scored Mount Olive's first goal, drew the defense into the box, then found Sonnendecker open. Sonnendecker put the ball in the lower right corner to give the Trojans the win at the 92:46 mark.

Mount Olive improved to 2-0 in overtime matches this season.

The Trojans allowed King a goal in the ninth minute of the contest, but answered less than six minutes later. Eto dribbled from left of the goal and shot across the net to even the score 1-1 at the 14:15 mark.

The match stayed tied until a long distance blast by Lockett at 34:48 gave Mount Olive its first lead. Sean Lockett's shot from just inside midfield stayed low and went off the Tornado goalkeeper as the Trojans went into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.

King capitalized on a restart to even the match less than nine minutes into the second half. Thomas Dube scored at the 53:36 mark to tie the score 2-2. Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the half.

Mount Olive picked up the win despite being outshot 14-10. Sonnendecker's game winner was the only shot by either team in overtime.

The Trojans entered Saturday's play tied with North Greenville for the No. 8 seed in the tournament. Mount Olive fell to North Greenville during the regular season and needed to finish ahead of the Crusaders to earn the conference tournament berth. North Greenville held a 2-1 halftime lead before Belmont Abbey rallied for three second-half goals.

Tuesday's contest is a rematch of the quarterfinal round of last year's conference tournament. The Trojans defeated Erskine in a penalty kick shootout to advance to the semifinal round.
