Box Score Josh Woodburn scored his first goal as a Trojan, but Belmont Abbey scored the go-ahead goal in the final second of the first half and went on to defeat Mount Olive 3-1 in Conference Carolinas men's soccer Wednesday at Amon Field. Woodburn had been a starting defender in his first two years at Mount Olive before being moved to forward this season.
Mount Olive (1-9-0 overall, 1-3-0 Conference Carolinas) jumped out to an early lead for the second straight match as Bright Eto crossed the ball to Woodburn at the top right of the box. Woodburn's shot nipped the inside of the right post and into the back of the net as the Trojans led 1-0 at the 11:56 mark.
The Trojans maintained the lead until Belmont Abbey (4-6-0, 2-3-0) got on the scoreboard at 31:53. Mark Wallace took a service from David De Los Reyes and scored from the top right of the box to even the contest. The match appeared to be headed to a halftime tie with less than five seconds remaining, but Declan McQuillan crossed from the right side and Clay Dimick's 15-yard shot went across the line just before the horn to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead at the half. McQuillan added a goal of his own on a free kick seven minutes into the half to complete the scoring.
Mount Olive outshot Belmont Abbey 7-3 in the first half and 9-7 for the match.
Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans travel to Gaffney, S.C., to take on Limestone in a Conference Carolinas match-up. Match time is 3 p.m.
