Ellie Barnes' First Collegiate Hat Trick Lifts Trojans Past Chowan 7-0

Box Score

Sophomore Ellie Barnes recorded her first collegiate hat trick and freshman Alex Wetherholt added a pair of goals to spark Mount Olive to a 7-0 victory over Chowan in non-conference women's soccer Monday at Murfreesboro, N.C. Damilia Brooks and Jaclyn Thomas each scored a goal as the Trojans posted their third win in their last four matches and equaled their highest single-match scoring output of the season.

Mount Olive (5-10-2) got on the scoreboard at the 3:37 mark when Barnes put home the rebound after Wetherholt's shot was deflected by Hawks goalkeeper Tara Maready. Chowan (1-16-0) stayed within a goal until the 21:11 mark when Thomas found Brooks for a shot from of the top of the box to extend the Trojans' lead to 2-0.

Wetherholt scored Mount Olive's next two goals, capitalizing on a free kick at 26:36 and capturing a loose ball in the box at 37:22 as the Trojans went into halftime with a 4-0 lead. Trojan starting goalkeeper Stephanie McCoy recorded a save on Chowan's lone shot in the first half. McCoy played 27 minutes in goal and Carolin Edenhofner and Kelsey Cerrito combined for the remaining 63 minutes for the Trojans' third shutout of the season.

Barnes tallied her second goal of the match at 53:14, then set up Thomas for a breakaway goal just 18 seconds later as Mount Olive built its lead to 6-0. Barnes completed her hat trick at the 75:26 mark, scoring from the top of the box after a service from Hope Perry.

The Trojans outshot Chowan 34-4 for the match. Maready finished with 10 saves for the Hawks.

Barnes' hat trick is the first by a Trojan since Lindsey Stanley scored three goals October 18, 2011, also against Chowan. Barnes' seven points (three goals and an assist) is also the most since Stanley against Chowan.

Mount Olive concludes regular season play Saturday as the Trojans travel to Bristol, Tenn., to take on King in Conference Carolinas action. Mount Olive still has a shot at qualifying for next week's Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Tournament, but needs to defeat King and have other conference results this week go in the Trojans' favor.
