Trojan Rally From Two-Goal Deficit Stuns UNC Pembroke 3-2

Box Score

Damilia Brooks scored the tying goal early in the second half and assisted on Alex Wetherholt's game winner in the 75th minute as Mount Olive rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit for a 3-2 victory over UNC Pembroke in non-conference women's soccer Tuesday at Pembroke, N.C. Wetherholt scored only 40 seconds after re-entering the match as the Trojans picked up their second straight win.

After tying the contest with a pair of goals within the first eight minutes of the second half, Mount Olive (4-9-2) took its first lead of the day when Brooks played the ball to Wetherholt. Wetherholt's shot caromed off a defender into the bottom left corner of the goal to put the Trojans ahead to stay at the 74:46 mark. UNC Pembroke had three shot attempts in the final seven minutes, but an offside in the 88th minute negated the Braves' final challenge.

The Trojans were limited to three shots in the first half, but strung together four shots in a span of 80 seconds early in the second half, capped by a goal by Carlee Bock. After Brooks' shot just inside the 51st minute went off the post, Bock eventually captured the ball and scored from 30 yards out to pull Mount Olive within 2-1 at 50:35.

Brooks put home the equalizer less than three minutes later after a cross from the left side by Lauren Power. Brooks shot into the upper left corner as the Trojans tied the match 2-2 at the 53:08 mark.

UNC Pembroke (6-8-1) broke a scoreless tie with two goals in a three-minute span late in the first half. Michelle Hernandez's service from midfield found Rae-Shawna Campbell, who lifted a shot from 15 yards out to give the Braves a 1-0 lead at 39:36. Trojan goalkeeper Carolin Edenhofner, who had lunged to make a save from point-blank range just five minutes earlier, nearly had another leaping save, but the ball glanced just off her fingertips. Caroline Sanchez added a goal off another assist by Hernandez at 42:45 as UNC Pembroke led 2-0 at halftime.

While records prior to 2003 were not immediately available, the win is believed to be the first in Trojan women's soccer history after trailing by at least two goals. The last time Mount Olive rallied from a two-goal deficit was October 15, 2005, when the Trojans scored two goals in the final 61 seconds of the first half to tie Belmont Abbey before falling 3-2 in overtime.

Mount Olive plays its home finale and honors its four seniors Saturday as the Trojans play host to Lees-McRae for Senior Day in Conference Carolinas action. Along with Bock, fellow seniors Jordyn Koerner, Kayla Meza and Elvia Rodriguez will be recognized prior to the contest. Match time is 1 p.m. at Amon Field.
