Box Score Dezirae Mackey and Carly White recorded 10 kills apiece, but Mount Olive was unable to stop an Erskine rally as the Trojans fell to the Flying Fleet 20-25, 27-25, 22-25, 25-12, 15-6 in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Saturday at Due West, S.C. The Trojans are now 1-2 in five-set matches this season.
Mount Olive (7-12 overall, 4-5 Conference Carolinas) tied the fifth set 2-2, but Erskine (5-11, 4-5) scored the next five points and led the remainder of the set. The margin reached double figures before a kill by White and an Erskine error saved two match points. But the Flying Fleet sealed the win on a kill by Allie Evans.
In the first set, a kill and a block by White helped Mount Olive break away from an 8-8 tie and the Trojans led the remainder of the set. The lead grew to as many as seven points and Danielle Plante's kill on set point gave Mount Olive the opening set.
The Trojans trailed by as many as six points in the second set before rallying for four unanswered points to take a 24-23 lead. But after each team saved a set point, Erskine won the final two points to even the match at two sets apiece.
Sarah Robertson's kill in the third set broke a 17-17 tie and triggered a five-point run as the Trojans moved to within a set of winning the match. But in the fourth set, Evans served two aces during Erskine's game-breaking 8-1 run as the Flying Fleet again tied the match and forced the deciding fifth set.
Trojan setter Nicole Karas notched her second double-double with 29 assists and 18 digs. Nicole Sparks added 16 digs, Lauren Lee had 14 digs and Charnel Austin finished with 11 digs. Lee served a match-high five aces, while White added a match-high seven blocks.
Caitlin Bullock led all players with 16 kills for Erskine.
Mount Olive returns to action Tuesday as the Trojans play host to Converse in a Conference Carolinas match-up. Match time is 7 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
