Box Score Mount Olive freshman Nick Bernsdorf recorded his second consecutive shutout, denying visiting Erskine through two overtimes as the Trojans battled for a 0-0 Conference Carolinas men's soccer tie Saturday night at Amon Field.
Bernsdorf and Flying Fleet goalkeeper Robert De La Vina staved off one shot after another for 110 minutes, as the squads bombarded the pair with 40 combined shots. Neither team could find the target, however, and when necessary, the keepers made several spectacular saves.
Bernsdorf matched the six saves he recorded in an overtime win against Pfeiffer two days earlier. He needed every one of them against Erskine (3-2-2 overall, 2-0-1 CC). In the 23rd minute, Bernsdorf made a sprawling catch of a close in shot from the Flying Fleet's Ross Henderson. Like De La Vina, he also benefited from missed opportunities by his opponent. In the 70th minute, Andrew Settlemire missed a wide open net with a chance to put Erskine on top.
Mount Olive's best opportunity came in the 55th minute when Alex Bosch's shot was re-directed over the net.
Neither team posed a serious threat in the overtime periods. Neither goalkeeper recorded a save. In all, Mount Olive outshot Erskine 24-16.
With the tie, Mount Olive (2-4-1, 2-1-1) remains one game behind the leaders in the loss column. The Trojans face another team that has not lost in conference play on Wednesday when Queens comes to Amon Field for a doubleheader. The men's contest will begin at 4 p.m., followed by the women's match at 7 p.m.
