Box Score Mount Olive fought back from a two-set deficit to force a fifth set, but an 8-0 run in the final set was the difference as the Trojans fell to Coker 25-16, 25-21, 22-25, 24-26, 15-6 in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Friday at Kornegay Arena. Carly White had 12 of her season-high 22 kills in the third and fourth sets to help fuel the Trojans' comeback.
Mount Olive (5-7 overall, 1-3 Conference Carolinas) jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the fifth set as White recorded a kill and combined with Talita Rocha on a block. But a Trojan service error broke a 5-5 tie and put Coker (2-11, 2-1) ahead to stay. Samantha Celek and Hannah Vadakin had aces earlier in the set and Taylor Willis' seven-point service run gave the Cobras a 13-5 advantage.
A block by Dezirae Mackey and Sarah Robertson slowed Coker's run, but Catie Truzzolino's kill on match point sealed the win for the Cobras.
After dropping the first two sets, Mount Olive used White's kill and a Rocha/White block in a 4-0 run to take a 17-14 lead in the third set. Coker got as close as 20-19, but Nicole Powell came off the bench to serve an ace and White's kill on set point kept the Trojans in the match.
Mount Olive built a 21-18 lead in the fourth set after White's kill capped a 3-0 run. Coker used a three-point run of its own to tie the set as Willis had a kill and was part of a triple block. Rocha's kill broke a 23-23 tie, but Coker saved a set point on a kill by Willis. White's kill gave the Trojans another set point and a Mackey/Robertson block evened the match at two sets apiece.
In the first set, Coker spotted Mount Olive the opening point, then ran off the next eight points. Hannah Cabaniss' ace helped give the Cobras their first double-digit lead at 16-6 and the Trojans never got closer than seven points.
Mount Olive rallied from an early three-point deficit in the second set as Charnel Austin's service ace highlight a 7-0 run to give the Trojans a 12-8 lead. But Coker came back with six unanswered points to go back on top to stay.
Robertson finished with nine kills and four blocks to go with a career-high 17 digs for Mount Olive. Mackey added eight kills and six blocks for the Trojans. Laura Vega came off the bench to record 43 assists and an ace, while Austin served a match-high three aces. Nicole Sparks recorded 14 digs.
Willis led Coker with 12 kills and four blocks, while April Griggs added 11 kills. Celek recorded 46 assists and Cabaniss had 14 digs.
Friday's match was "80's Night" at Kornegay Arena as 80's music was played throughout the evening and an 80's costume contest was held.
Mount Olive concludes its weekend homestand Saturday as the Trojans play host to Belmont Abbey in Conference Carolinas action. Match time is 2 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
