10-Run Second Inning Propels No. 28 Baseball Past Shaw 16-1

Box Score

Jermaine Berry and Jacob Rogers collected four hits apiece and Mount Olive sent 14 batters to the plate in a 10-run second inning as the nationally 28th-ranked Trojans defeated Shaw 16-1 in non-conference baseball Tuesday at Scarborough Field. Rogers belted a two-run homer in the inning and came within a triple of hitting for the cycle.

Including Friday's doubleheader sweep at Barton, Mount Olive has outscored its opponents 42-4 in its last three games.

Mount Olive (10-5) spotted Shaw an unearned run in the top of the first before Berry got the second inning started with a leadoff single. Antonio Callaway reached on a bunt single down the third base line one out later and advanced to third on Cameron Sherrer's rbi-single. Callaway scored on Matt Patrone's drag bunt down the first base line to put the Trojans ahead to stay 2-1.

Two more runs came home on Mike Mercurio's single and Braden Reitano followed with a triple to right-center. Rogers worked the count full, then drove a pitch high over the right field fence for his team-leading fourth home run of the season to extend the Trojans' lead to 7-1.

Berry singled for the second time in the inning and Daniel Coffey followed with a two-out walk. Berry came home on Callaway's second single of the inning and Sherrer's second rbi-single brought home Coffey. Callaway scored from home on a double steal to cap the inning and give the Trojans a 10-1 lead.

The Trojans completed the scoring with a pair of three-run innings. Berry had a two-run double in fifth and an rbi-single in the seventh. Rogers doubled in the first and had two singles with a pair of walks to reach base in all six plate appearances.

Shaw (3-2) was led offensively by leadoff batter Xavier Scotton, who singled and doubled in four at bats and scored the Bears' lone run. Scotton went to second on a throwing error to lead off the game and scored on a pair of groundouts.

Seven Trojan pitchers combined on a four hitters as starter Talton Cherry went the first three innings. Barinder Rakkar pitched a perfect fourth inning and Josh Frederick (1-1) was awarded the win after pitching a hitless fifth. After Derek Justice retired the side in order in the sixth, Ryan Poplin got out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh with a strikeout and a double-play ball. Chris Hinton got a pair of come-backers in a perfect eighth inning and Justin Weaver worked around a two-out walk in the ninth.

James Crew (1-2) rebounded from the Trojans' second inning outburst by retiring eight of the next 10 batters. Crew took over in the top of the first for starter Avery Upsher, who left the game with an injury after pitching to one batter.

Mount Olive returns to action Thursday as the Trojans play host to California (Pa.) in a non-conference match-up at Scarborough Field. Game time is 3 p.m. The two teams will meet again a week from Thursday, also at Scarborough Field.
