Box Score
Mount Olive used a six-run first inning and a strong relief performance from senior Chris Hinton to extend its winning streak to 13 games with a 15-6 non-conference baseball win Tuesday night at Scarborough Field. Mount Olive has now scored at least 10 runs in all but one game during the winning streak.
Leading the offensive outburst was catcher Geno Escalante, who extended his hitting streak to 22 games. It is his third consecutive four-hit game.
In the first, however, it was the wildness of the Falcon pitching staff that provided opportunities for the Trojans. Mount Olive (24-6) took advantage of five walks sandwiched in between singles from Antonio Callaway, Jermaine Berry and Escalante.
Two innings later, Mount Olive stretched the lead to 9-0. With the bases loaded and no outs, Callaway lofted a sacrifice fly, then Jacob Rogers followed with a two-run double.
On the mound, Trojan starter Derek Justice fought his way through early trouble to keep the Falcons off the scoreboard. Josh Frederick (2-1) and Skylar Sopotnick followed with four shutout innings.
Escalante's lead-off triple to open the fourth led to another run, as Nick Gaeta delivered an RBI-groundout. In the sixth, Berry led off with a double, moved ahead to third on an infield single by Escalante, and an error led to a run. Daniel Coffey added an RBI-single in the frame to make it 12-0.
The Falcons (10-24) made noise in the top of the eighth, taking advantage of Trojan miscues to score five unearned runs. Chris Hinton came out of the Mount Olive bullpen to coax a fly-out, but another error had Saint Augustine's threatening for more. Escalante and Hinton combined to end the threat when they threw out Ben Hatchell when he tried to score on a wild pitch.
Nine different Trojans delivered at least one hit in the game. Berry, Rogers and Gaeta each delivered two RBI.
The Trojans return to action Friday night when Erskine comes to Scarborough Field to begin a three-game series. Friday's game begins at 6 p.m. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.
