Jacob Rogers became the first player Mount Olive baseball history to homer twice in three consecutive games and the nationally 14th-ranked Trojans extended their winning streak to 11 with a Conference Carolinas doubleheader sweep over St. Andrews Friday at Laurinburg, N.C. The Trojans set a season high for runs scored in the opener with a 23-7 victory and completed the sweep with an 11-5 victory in the nightcap.
After flying out in Mount Olive's eight-run third inning in game one, Rogers belted a two-run homer in the fourth inning to give Mount Olive (22-6, 11-2 Conference Carolinas) a 10-0 lead. Rogers added a three-run blast in a 10-run eighth inning that extended the Trojans' lead to 23-3.
Rogers, who has 13 home runs in 28 games this season, hit two home runs in both ends of Wednesday's doubleheader at No. 5 Catawba. Including Friday's opener, Rogers hit more home runs in a span of 48 hours this week than he did in all of 2011. Rogers hit four homers last year while ranking among the national leaders in doubles and triples.
After being held scoreless through the first two innings, the Trojans gave starting pitcher Matt Dillon (4-0) more than sufficient run support to keep the junior right-hander unbeaten. Dillon went seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out seven.
Trojan catcher Nick Gaeta, who went 4-for-6 with four runs batted in, singled home two runs in the eight-run second inning. Jermaine Berry had a two-run double in the inning. Matt Patrone had a two-run single in the fifth and Braden Reitano hit a solo home run in the sixth. Gaeta added two hits in the 10-run eighth inning, including a two-run double.
Rogers' home run streak came to an end in game two, but he did go 1-for-3 with three rbi's. Rogers and Berry sparked a five-run first inning with rbi-singles and the Trojans took advantage of two errors by St. Andrews for two more runs. Mount Olive added single runs in each of the next three innings and Geno Escalante hit a two-run homer in the fifth.
St. Andrews (8-22, 2-12) scored all of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Chris Constantine had a two-run single and the Knights capitalized on three Trojan errors in the inning.
Trojan starter Zach Smith (5-2) went the distance in the seven-inning game, scattering seven hits and allowing no earned runs. Smith struck out six and walked two. He was aided by two double plays.
The series was originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, but was pushed up a day due to forecasts of thunderstorms during the weekend. The two teams conclude their series with a single game Saturday at noon.
