Late Run Sparks Men's Basketball Past Barton 83-67 In Battle Of The East

Box Score

Kason Cheeks and Craig Hayes both posted double-doubles and all five Trojan starters finished in double figures as Mount Olive used a 10-0 run during the final two-plus minutes to break away for an 83-67 victory over Barton in Conference Carolinas men's basketball Tuesday at Kornegay Arena. Hayes scored 17 points, Cheeks added 16 points and they each finished with 10 rebounds to give the Trojans the win in the annual "Battle of the East."

Mount Olive (16-7, 9-4 Conference Carolinas) held a 72-65 lead and a Trojan turnover with less than three minutes left gave Barton (14-9, 6-7) a chance to make it a two-possession game. But the Bulldogs missed the front end of a one-and-one and Dory Hines converted a three-point play on the Trojans' ensuing possession to extend the lead to 10. The margin stayed in double figures the rest of the way.

The Trojans forced a traveling call in the backcourt and Mahamed Ibrahim's fourth three-pointer of the game stretched the lead to 79-65 with 1:28 left to play. Mount Olive scored its remaining points from the free throw line and held Barton scoreless until a Gerald Boston jumper with 24 seconds remaining.

The first half saw four lead changes and three ties in the first six minutes before Ibrahim's three-pointer put Mount Olive ahead to stay and ignited a run of 15 unanswered points as the Trojans built a 24-12 lead with 12:01 remaining. Mount Olive led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but Boston's three-pointer with four seconds remaining pulled the Bulldogs within 45-39 at the break.

Hayes already had his double-double by halftime with 11 points and 10 boards. Boston scored 17 of his game-high 25 points in the first half for Barton, but the Bulldogs would never be able to cut into the six-point halftime margin during the second half.

The Trojans' lead reached double figures again as Derek Staton's steal led to a Hayes jumper to make the score 56-45 with 15:05 left in the contest. After Barton pulled within eight, Hayes' kickout set up Staton with a three-pointer and the Trojans scored seven unanswered points to extend the lead to 66-51 with 11:17 remaining.

Barton chipped away and Aaron Suggs' layup with 5:58 left drew the Bulldogs within 68-62. But after a pair of Trojan free throws and defensive stops, Staton's fall-away 19-footer from the right wing beat the shot clock buzzer and pushed the margin back to 10 with 4:10 remaining.

Suggs hit a three-pointer for Barton with 3:37 left after a Trojan turnover to make it a seven-point game. But the Bulldogs couldn't capitalize on a second straight turnover as Mount Olive put the game away.

Staton also finished with 16 points for the Trojans, while Ibrahim went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc and added 14 points. Hines hit 7-of-10 free throws and finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Hayes also dished out five assists. Mount Olive outrebounded Barton 47-33.

Joseph Velez was Barton's only other double-figure scorer, hitting 6-of-12 shots for 12 points. Boston dished out a game-high nine assists and shared team-high honors with six rebounds.

Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans play host to Erskine in the 29th Annual Mount Olive College Basketball Church Night. Special admission price is available for area church groups. Last year's Basketball Church Night was recognized as a 2010-11 NCAA Division II Game Environment Award of Excellence winner. Tip-off is 7 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.

The contest also marks Senior Night as Trojan seniors Kason Cheeks, Craig Hayes and Derek Staton will be recognized.
