Box Score Mount Olive was one point away from forcing a fifth set, but Queens held on for a 23-25, 25-16, 25-18, 26-24 victory over the Trojans in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Friday at Kornegay Arena. Carly White led the Trojans with 12 kills, while Danielle Plante added 10 kills.
Mount Olive (8-19 overall, 4-11 Conference Carolinas) trailed 18-14 in fourth set after Queens (18-11, 12-2) ran off six unanswered points. A Queens service error and an attack error helped Mount Olive climb back and after a second-ball kill by setter Nicole Karas, Dezirae Mackey's ace tied the set 19-19.
A second-ball kill by Queens setter Taylor Riley broke a 20-20 tie and Elizabeth Bialkowski followed with a kill for the Royals. White's kill gave Mount Olive a side out and Plante's serves forced overpasses by Queens on the next two points to give the Trojans a 23-22 lead. After a Queens side out tied the set, Lauren Lee answered with a kill to give Mount Olive a set point at 24-23.
Queens tied the set on Anna Gibbs' kill and after a Trojan error, Lindsay Everhart sealed the win with a kill to the back row.
In the first set, White's kill broke a 19-19 tie and Plante served her second ace of the set during a 4-0 run to put Mount Olive ahead to stay. Queens made a run of its own to pull within 24-23 after a block by Riley and Sarah Malpass. Mackey put home a kill to the back row to give Mount Olive the opening set.
After Queens spotted Mount Olive the first point of the second set, the Royals went on a 4-0 run and led the remainder of the set. Kills by Kemp and Gibbs gave Queens a 16-9 lead and the margin never fell below six points the rest of the way.
Mount Olive rallied from an early five-point deficit in the third set as kills by Plante and Ashlee Reuter tied the set at 9-9. Erin Mooney's ace capped a 4-0 Queens run to break the tie and Mount Olive never got closer than three points.
Mackey finished with eight kills and no errors in 12 attempts (.667 hitting percentage) to go with three blocks. Reuter added seven kills and also had three blocks. Laura Vega recorded 28 assists, while Karas finished with 16 assists as the two split time at setter. Nicole Sparks led all players with 14 digs.
Kemp had a match-high 20 kills and only two errors in 38 attempts for a .484 hitting percentage to lead Queens. Gibbs added 10 kills for the Royals, while Riley had 37 assists. Alexa Sparrell had a match-high three aces. Defensively, Bialkowski led all players with four blocks and Jocelyn Kellinger recorded 12 digs.
Mount Olive concludes its regular season and celebrates Senior Day Saturday as the Trojans play host to Pfeiffer in Conference Carolinas action. Seniors Talita Rocha and Laura Vega, along with junior Ashlee Reuter will be recognized prior to the match. Reuter is scheduled to graduate in May after just three years at Mount Olive. Match time is 2 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
