Men's Soccer Rally Comes Up Short At Limestone In Conference Carolinas Tournament Semifinals

Box Score

John Kwennah scored once and assisted on another goal, helping Mount Olive rally from an early deficit, but second -seeded Limestone held off the Trojans 4-2 to advance to Sunday's Conference Carolinas championship match.

It took the sixth-seeded Trojans 21 minutes to fall into a 3-0 hole as the Saints (12-5-1) dominated possession. Limestone doubled the Trojans' shot attempts in the contest and held a 16-3 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes. Early on, the Saints took advantage of their opportunities.

After intermission, Mount Olive's offense came alive. After a Louis Gorman shot sailed wide, Kwennah delivered his second goal of the season with an assist from senior Alex Rodriguez. Kwennah got an open shot from the right wing after receiving a pass from Rodriguez. The shot deflected off the keeper into the net in the 52nd minute.

The Trojans (6-9-4 overall) kept the pressure on the Saints' defense. Five minutes later, a Kwennah attempt was blocked. But in the 65th minute, it was Kwennah's hustle deep in Limestone territory that brought Mount Olive even closer.

Kwennah beat a Saint defender to a free ball in the right-hand corner, then threaded the needle with pass to teammate Craig Allan for an open shot in front of the goal from 12 yards out. Kwennah's pass went between the keeper and a defender to reach Allan for his third goal of the season.

With the Saints' lead cut to 3-2, Limestone's defense buckled down. Goalkeeper Kyle Karagitz (one save) turned away a shot by Allan in the 72nd minute. It was the last shot on goal in the match for the Trojans.

Limestone put the match away in the 82nd minute when Thomas Keen scored on a rebound. In the first half, Limestone got goals from Jorge MacKenna (5th minute), Jack Bailey (12th) and Thomas McCready (20) to build its big lead.

In goal, Nick Bernsdorf and Kyle Lavender each recorded four saves. Limestone was charged with 15 fouls compared to 10 for the Trojans.

Friday afternoon's finale marked the final contest for Mount Olive seniors Kelly Keaton, Ramon Gallardo, Josh Woodburn, Cort Harter, Muhammed Ceesay and Rodriguez.
