Men's Soccer Battles Regionally 10th-Ranked Coker To 0-0 Double OT Tie

Box Score

Mount Olive goalkeeper Nick Bernsdorf posted his third consecutive shutout and nearly assisted on a game-winning goal as the Trojans battled regionally 10th-ranked Coker to a 0-0 tie in Conference Carolinas men's soccer Tuesday at Amon Field. The draw was the Trojans' second in nine days against a team ranked in the Southeast Region Top 10.

Mount Olive (5-8-3 overall, 3-4-2 Conference Carolinas) had a chance for the win in the final seconds of the second overtime. A Coker foul and straight red card gave Mount Olive a free kick 10 yards inside the Coker half with 10.7 seconds remaining. Bernsdorf came out of goal and chipped the ball towards the box. Pablo Galarza's 22-yard shot was wide to the right and time expired.

Coker (11-3-1, 7-1-1) finished with an 11-10 shot advantage, including 4-1 after regulation. Bernsdorf recorded six saves, while James Sweeney finished with four saves for Coker.

The tie keeps Mount Olive's chances alive of earning a spot in the Conference Carolinas Tournament, which gets underway Tuesday. The Trojans also played regionally fourth-ranked Montevallo to a 1-1 double overtime tie October 14.

Tuesday's match was the Trojans' home finale. Mount Olive concludes regular season play Saturday as the Trojans travel to Banner Elk, N.C., to take on Lees-McRae in Conference Carolinas action. Match time is 4 p.m.
