The victory keeps the Trojans in the hunt for one of the final remaining spots in the upcoming conference tournament.
Mount Olive (5-8-2 overall, 3-4-1 Conference Carolinas) entered the match one point behind Lees-McRae for the eighth and final spot in the conference tournament, which begins October 30. (Three points are awarded for a conference win, one point for a tie.) With the win, Mount Olive (10 points) moves ahead of Lees-McRae, who traveled to Barton Saturday night. The Trojans have matches against Coker and Lees-McRae remaining.
Against Belmont Abbey (6-7, 4-4 CC), it appeared the Trojans were ready to settle for a tie until a corner kick opportunity presented itself in the 79th minute. Tyler Vandevender delivered the ball to the 6-foot-2 Tolston who headed the ball past the Crusader goalkeeper for the game-winner. Mount Olive only had three corner opportunities in the match compared to nine for the Crusaders.
Tolston's marker was his second of the season and made a winner of Trojan keeper Nick Bernsdorf, who needed just one save to pick up his fourth shutout, and second in as many contests. Bernsdorf has not allowed more than one goal in four consecutive matches.
Belmont Abbey keeper Philip Bru finished with one save as well, as the teams managed just four total shots on goal combined.
The Trojans will try to keep its postseason hopes alive Tuesday night when Coker comes to Amon Field for Senior Night beginning at 7 p.m. The women's match will begin at 4 p.m.
