Box Score 2 Erika Conner led all players with 15 kills, Carly White matched a career high with 10 blocks, and both players notched double-doubles as Mount Olive opened the 2011 season with a 26-24, 25-27, 25-14, 25-18 victory over Concord in day one of the Chowan University Janet Collins Women's Volleyball Tournament Friday at Murfreesboro, N.C. Conner recorded 11 digs and White tallied 13 kills, as did Dezirae Mackey. Keri Nolan added 10 kills as the Trojans placed four players in double figures.
White was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.91 kills and 1.36 blocks per set, while recording a .508 hitting percentage in three matches.
Mackey added seven blocks, while Talita Rocha had six blocks as the Trojans notched 18 blocks as a team, their highest single-match team total since 2007. Mount Olive also finished with a .360 team hitting percentage. Charnel Austin tallied match highs of four aces and 31 assists, while Laura Vega added 20 assists. Nicole Sparks led the Trojans defensively with 17 digs.
The Trojans narrowly missed having five players in double figures as Rocha finished with nine kills and only one error in 10 attempts for an .800 hitting percentage. Mackey recorded a .647 hitting percentage with only two errors in 17 attempts.
Mackey, Nolan, Rocha, Sparks and Vega all made their Trojan debuts Friday. Mackey is a freshman, while the other four transferred to Mount Olive.
The Trojans concluded tournament play Saturday with a pair of matches. White had her second straight 13-kill performance to lead all players, but the Trojans fell to tournament host Chowan 25-14, 23-25, 25-17, 25-17. After recording 18 team blocks Friday against Concord – Mount Olive's best single-match blocks total since 2007 – the Trojans were limited to seven team blocks against Chowan. Mackey finished with five blocks, while Sparks recorded 11 digs.
Mount Olive fell to fellow Conference Carolinas member Barton 27-25, 25-16, 25-19 in the tournament finale. White led the Trojans with 17 kills and four blocks, while Mackey added 11 kills. Laura Vega recorded 36 assists, her single-match high as a Trojan. Sparks tallied 14 digs and averaged 4.18 digs per set in the tournament. Conner reached double figures for the second time with 11 digs. The match does not count in the conference standings.
Mount Olive is off until next weekend when the Trojans play host to the Mount Olive College Invitational Friday and Saturday at Kornegay Arena. Participating teams are Elizabeth City State, Fayetteville State, Lander and North Greenville. The Trojans take on Fayetteville State (4 p.m.) and Elizabeth City State (6 p.m.) Friday, then conclude wrap up tournament play Saturday against North Greenville (10 a.m.) and Lander (2 p.m.). North Greenville is in its first year in Conference Carolinas, but the contest will not count in the conference standings.
