Women's Volleyball Closes Regular Season With Three-Set Win At Barton

Box Score

Sarah Robertson led three players in double figures with 12 kills and Nicole Powell's ace on set point capped an 8-2 run in the second set as Mount Olive closed out the regular season with a 25-19, 26-24, 25-13 victory over Barton in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Saturday at Wilson, N.C. Erika Conner notched her seventh double-double of the season with 11 kills and 12 digs, while Carly White added 11 kills and eight blocks, including a solo block on match point.

Both teams entered Saturday's match with their conference tournament fates already determined. Mount Olive (16-13 overall, 9-8 Conference Carolinas) clinched the East Division No. 2 seed and a home match Tuesday against King in the first round of the 2011 Conference Carolinas Tournament. Barton (10-15, 6-11) had been eliminated from contention earlier in the day. The Trojans won both regular season conference matches against the Bulldogs this season.

Mount Olive trailed by as many as four points early in the second set before a pair of kills by Robertson and a back row kill by Destiny Ma'ave-Kuewa highlighted an 8-3 run to give the Trojans an 11-10 lead. The two teams exchanged a series of side outs until Chelsea Fleury served three consecutive aces for Barton and the Bulldogs built the lead to 22-18.

Kills by Mackey and Conner pulled the Trojans within a point and White's ace tied the set at 23-23. Mount Olive went on top on a Bulldog error, but a Trojan attack error saved one set point. Mount Olive went back on top and Barton wasn't able to handle Powell's serve to the right corner as the Trojans took a two-set lead.

The Trojans broke away from a one-point lead in the third set as White capitalized on overpasses for a pair of kills at the net Robertson closed out an extended rally with a kill on the left side to give Mount Olive its first double-digit lead of the night at 21-11. Mount Olive won a bizarre point early in the set when Nicole Sparks' dig went off the head of Trojan setter Charnel Austin over the net onto the Bulldog court. White blocked an attempt in the middle to end the match.

In the first set, Mount Olive saw a 15-10 lead cut down to two points, but that's as close as Barton would get. After a Trojan timeout, Conner's kill on the left side stopped the Bulldogs' run and Dezirae Mackey ended a long rally with a kill on the left side. The Trojans got a double block by Robertson and White on set point.

Austin finished with 37 assists, while Lauren Lee had eight digs. Robertson added a collegiate-high seven blocks.

Kati Wood had a double-double of her own for Barton with 11 kills and 10 digs. Bulldog setter Meka Hoover had 24 assists, while Fleury finished with a match-high four aces.

White, a sophomore middle blocker from Ash, N.C., said the team treated Saturday's contest as a must-win match, even though they knew their seeding in the tournament.

"We still wanted to play for the win, we wanted to come out with a winning season," said White. "It was Barton's senior night, so we knew they'd be fired up."

Mount Olive defeated King in three sets just eight days earlier at Kornegay Arena. White finished with 18 kills and only three errors in 31 attempts in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. King is the No. 3 seed out of the West Division.

"We're excited to play King," said White. "We played a good match against them the first time. They're an excellent team, but we feel like we have a good chance to win, as long as we keep playing hard and play like we know how to."

Winners of Tuesday's four first round matches advance to the semifinals Friday. The championship match is slated for Sunday, November 13. Highest remaining seeds host each round.

Match time Tuesday is 6:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
