Mount Olive 100, Brevard 78
Hayes' three-pointer with 17:40 left in the first half gave Mount Olive (3-0) a 5-4 lead and the Trojans led the rest of the way. Mount Olive built the lead to as many as 11 before Brevard (0-4) pulled within 27-21 after Gaither Hendrix's three-point play with 9:59 remaining. But Martin Barrett answered with a three-point play of his own for Mount Olive and Cheeks followed with a layup and putback to extend the lead to 34-21 with 8:42 left and the margin never fell below double digits.
McCain hit three three-pointers in a span of 3 1/2 minutes to extend the lead to 51-28, the biggest margin of the half. The Trojans went into the locker room with a 53-34 halftime advantage.
Michael Gist sparked Brevard early in the second half with a jumper and a layup off his own steal. Hayes helped thwart the rally with a pair of baskets and Dory Hines' steal led to a dunk by Cheeks as the Trojans matched their halftime lead at 59-40 with 17:40 remaining. Brevard never got any closer than 14 points and the lead ballooned to 87-52 on Darrell Patterson's layup with 8:49 left to play. Barton 68, Virginia State 50
Jarrett Jernigan and Joseph Velez combined for 10 points during a 12-0 that began late in the first half and put Barton (3-1) ahead to stay. The Virginia State (0-3) led 26-15 with 4:36 left in the first half after back-to-back three-pointers by Ibn Rassoull. After Barton pulled with five, Rassoull hit another three to make it a 29-21 Trojan lead with 3:09 left. Those would be Virginia State's final points before halftime.
Barton closed the gap to 29-24 at the break after Velez's layup with five seconds left off an acrobatic assist by Aaron Suggs. The scoreboard initially showed Barton with a 27-26 halftime lead, but the score was corrected during intermission when referees determined that a three-pointer by Rassoull was inadvertently credited to a Barton player with the same number who did not play in the first half.
Velez and Jernigan sandwiched baskets around a Jaren Haley layup to open the second half and Jernigan followed with a three-pointer off a Haley steal to put Barton ahead to stay 33-29 with 18:22 left to play. Rassoull's jumper 14 seconds later ended Virginia State's five-minute scoreless drought, but the Trojans never got any closer.
Barton's lead reached double figures on Suggs' three-pointer with 7:21 left and the Bulldogs built the lead to as many as 21 points.
Haley led four Barton players in double figures with 16 points, while Gerald Boston added 14 points, seven assists and four steals.
