Box Score Carly White recorded her 18th kill on match point and Nicole Sparks' four-point service run broke a 19-19 tie in the final set as Mount Olive defeated King 25-22, 26-24, 25-20 in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Friday at Kornegay Arena. The win keeps the Trojans in sole possession of second place in the Conference Carolinas East Division standings.
Mount Olive (14-13 overall, 7-8 Conference Carolinas) trailed 19-18 in the third set before White's kill ignited a match-ending 7-1 run for the Trojans. Sparks' match-high fourth ace of the contest put Mount Olive ahead to stay as Erika Conner and Nicole Powell followed with kills. A block on the left side by Conner and White gave the Trojans a 23-19.
After a King side out on a kill by Sarah Van Goethem, Powell's kill gave the Trojans a side out and match point. White served and after Sparks dug up a King attack, White put home a kill from the back row to seal the win.
The five-point win in the final set was the largest margin for either team in the match as all three sets were tight throughout. Mount Olive had a four-point lead in the second set and the Trojans never trailed by more than two points at any time in the match.
King (18-12, 10-5) took a 19-17 lead in the first set after back-to-back aces by Natalie Brown, who finished with three aces. Mount Olive still trailed 22-21 when consecutive kills by Sarah Robertson put the Trojans on top. Charnel Austin followed with one of her three aces and White's kill gave Mount Olive a one-set lead.
The second set saw both teams make dramatic rallies as King used kills by Van Goethem and Kristen Hamel to turn a 14-10 deficit into a 15-15 tie. The Tornado appeared headed to take the lead, but Powell dug a King attack on the right sideline and Dezirae Mackey put down Austin's set. The Trojans built the lead back to 20-17, but King scored the next four points, capped by an ace by Van Goethem.
A pair of kills by White and an ace by Austin gave Mount Olive a 23-21, but King made yet another comeback. A pair of kills by Ashley Pittman sandwiched around a Payton Tipton ace put the Tornado within a point of tying the match at a set apiece. White's kill saved a set point and after a Tornado attack error, White got a kill down the middle to give the Trojans a two-set lead. White had nine kills in the second set.
Austin finished with 34 assists for Mount Olive. Conner led all players defensively with 10 digs, but had her streak of consecutive matches reaching double figures in kills snapped at 13. Robertson finished with eight kills, while Mackey had six kills and no errors in nine attempts. White had only three errors in 31 attempts for a .484 hitting percentage. Mount Olive recorded a team hitting percentage of .327.
Pittman led King with 13 kills, while Van Goethem added nine kills for the Tornado. Van Goethem and Tipton each had two assists. Shannon Earwood recorded 32 assists, while Brown and Van Goethem each had eight digs.
Mount Olive plays its regular season home finale and celebrates Senior Day Saturday as the Trojans play host to North Greenville in Conference Carolinas action. Trojan senior Destiny Ma'ave-Kuewa will be recognized during ceremonies prior to the contest. Match time is 2 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
