Box Score Carly White had three of her match-high 16 kills late in the first set to stop a frantic comeback and Mount Olive went on to record its fifth win in a row as the Trojans defeated Saint Augustine's 27-25, 25-18, 25-18 in non-conference women's volleyball Wednesday at Kornegay Arena. The win moved the Trojans back to the .500 mark for the first time since mid-September.
Mount Olive (10-10) raced out to a 6-1 lead in the first set as White and Erika Conner combined for five early kills. Saint Augustine's (8-14) rallied to tie the set 10-10 after kills by Kathyrn Tokarski and Keisha Parris during a four-point run. Mount Olive appeared to regain control of the set after a pair of kills by Sarah Robertson gave the Trojans a 22-17 advantage.
The Trojans led 24-21 after a kill by White, but the Falcons saved three consecutive set points to tie the set. Kills by White gave Mount Olive two more set points and a Saint Augustine's attack error allowed the Trojans to escape with a first-set victory.
Mount Olive led 6-1 in the second set as well, but was able to avoid a Falcon comeback. Kills by Conner and Robertson helped the Trojans take their biggest lead at 19-10 and the margin never fell below five points the rest of the way.
In the third set, a pair of aces by Destiny Ma'ave-Kuewa highlighted a 5-0 run to give Mount Olive an 11-7 lead and put the Trojans ahead to stay. The margin grew to as many as eight before a pair of blocks by Victoria Davis helped Saint Augustine's pull within 22-18. But Dezirae Mackey's kill ended the Falcons' run and the Trojans scored the final two points to seal the win.
Mount Olive has won six of its last seven matches, starting with a come-from-behind five-set win September 27 at Saint Augustine's. The Trojans' current winning streak is their longest since a six-match winning streak in 2009.
Conner finished with 11 kills and two aces for Mount Olive, while Charnel Austin recorded 38 assists and two aces. Ma'ave-Kuewa led all players with three service aces. Defensively, Conner finished with eight digs, while Ma'ave-Kuewa had seven digs, Nicole Sparks tallied six digs and Lauren Lee added five digs. The Trojans were held without a block for the first time this season.
Tokarski recorded a double-double for Saint Augustine's with 11 kills and a match-high 10 digs. Davis added eight kills and five blocks, while Roxanne Smith finished with 25 assists.
Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans travel to Gaffney, S.C., to take on Limestone in a Conference Carolinas match-up. Match time is 2 p.m.
