Carly White Ties School Kills Record In Women's Volleyball Win Over Converse

Box Score

Carly White recorded 11 of her career-high 22 kills in the third set as Mount Olive rallied from a six-point deficit to close out a 25-17, 25-21, 25-21 victory over Converse in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Saturday at Kornegay Arena. White tied Heidi Busch's school record for most kills in a three-set match and became the first player in Trojan women's volleyball history to record at least 20 kills and post a hitting percentage over .700 in the same match.

Mount Olive (6-10 overall, 2-6 Conference Carolinas) won the first two sets, but trailed 18-12 in the third set. The Trojans used four kills by Erika Conner and three kills by White during a 7-1 run to tie the set. After a Converse side out, three straight kills by White and a double block by White and Ashlee Reuter gave the Trojans a 23-20 lead. After a kill by Reuter, Converse saved one match point, but White closed out the match with a kill.

In the opening set, Mount Olive used an ace by Charnel Austin and back-to-back aces by Conner to turn a one-point lead into a 19-13 advantage. The margin never fell below five points the rest of the way as White finished the set with a kill.

Converse (2-11, 1-7) built a 13-9 lead in the second set on the strength of Val Thoms' attack and back-to-back aces by Brianna Bateman. Thoms recorded nine of her team-high 18 kills in the second set, but Mount Olive rallied to take a 17-16 lead after a pair of kills by Dezirae Mackey. Thoms answered with a kill for the Valkyries, but Conner's kill put the Trojans ahead to stay in the set.

White became the first Trojan in six years to record at least 20 kills in a three-set match. Busch had 20 kills in a three-set win over Anderson in 2005, one year after tallying 22 kills in a three-set victory over Coker.

Mount Olive finished with a season-best team hitting percentage of .432, recording 54 kills and only 13 errors in 95 attempts. Conner had 13 kills in 28 attempts for a .429 hitting percentage, while Reuter added nine kills in 17 attempts for a .471 hitting percentage. Conner and Reuter had only one error apiece.
