Dr. B. Todd Smith, of Wilson Orthopaedic Surgery and Neurology Center, P.A., a Division of EmergeOrth, is the Orthopedic Team Physician for University of Mount Olive Athletics.

Dr. Smith was born in Pittsboro, North Carolina. Growing up in North Carolina, he was always active and involved in sports. His desire to become an orthopaedic surgeon grew out of several sports injuries which required surgery.

After receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he attended Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Stony Brook in New York. He then completed an additional year of training in Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine at the University of Kentucky. There he received training in treating athletes at all levels of competition. He served as the Assistant Team Physician for the University of Kentucky Wildcats and the Kentucky State University Thorobreds. Additionally, he was the assistant team physician for the 2004 NIFL Arena League National Championship football team, the Lexington Horsemen.

Dr. Smith treats patients of all ages and continues to treat athletes at all levels of competition. He has served as the team physician for Carolina Stallions semi-pro football team, North Carolina Wesleyan College, Barton College, the Wilson Tobs, and several high schools in Nash and Wilson counties. He actively provides sideline coverage for the Beddingfield High School football team.

Dr. Smith has been in practice in eastern North Carolina since 2004. His practice focuses on sports medicine including arthroscopic surgery. He has expertise in anatomic ACL reconstruction, Rotator Cuff repair, and cartilage repair in the knee and shoulder. Additionally, he provides general orthopedic care for children and adults including fracture care and total knee replacements. He prides himself on communicating with his patients at each visit and takes an active role in working with injured patients’ physical therapists or athletic trainers.

Dr. Smith is board-certified in Orthopaedics. He is an active member of the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). He serves as the Chairman for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Wilson Medical Center.
