Coach Derrick Lucas is a passionate and experienced collegiate football coach who currently serves as the Head Women’s Flag Football Coach at the University of Mount Olive in Mount Olive, North Carolina. Known for his commitment to player development, discipline, accountability, and building championship-caliber programs, Coach Lucas brings a wealth of coaching experience and leadership to the Trojans.
In his inaugural season leading the University of Mount Olive Women’s Flag Football program, Coach Lucas guided the Trojans to a 7–7 record, with two players earning Conference Carolinas All-Conference honors. As he enters his second season, his focus remains on building a competitive program, developing student-athletes on and off the field, and establishing a lasting culture of excellence under the philosophy “All Gas, No Brakes — Setting the Standard.”
Before arriving at Mount Olive, Coach Lucas built an extensive coaching résumé across collegiate and high school football. During his time at the University of Pikeville, he served as Running Backs Coach and was part of the program’s 2016 championship success. His coaching contributions included helping develop two All-Americans and seven All-Conference players.
Coach Lucas also served at Andrew College as Associate Head Football Coach, Offensive Coordinator, Special Teams Coordinator, and Head Women’s Flag Football Coach. His offensive leadership helped produce one of the nation's top rushing attacks at the junior college level, including a No. 1 national rushing ranking in the NJCAA.
His coaching experience also includes positions at Riverside Military Academy, East Hall High School in Georgia, Lyon College, and Bethel College in Kansas. Throughout his career, Coach Lucas has earned a reputation for emphasizing toughness, preparation, fundamentals, and the development of student athletes both athletically and academically.
A graduate of Faulkner University, where he earned his bachelor's degree, Coach Lucas believes successful programs are built on four foundational values: Family, Accountability, Discipline, and Toughness.
At the University of Mount Olive, Coach Lucas is committed to creating opportunities for young women to compete at the collegiate level, earn their degrees, develop leadership skills, and prepare for success beyond athletics. His ultimate mission is to establish the Trojans as a respected and competitive program in Conference Carolinas and across collegiate women's flag football.
