Trojans Defeat Cougars of Columbus State in Overtime Thriller at Barton 45 Second Classic

WILSON, North Carolina - The University of Mount Olive men's basketball team defeated the Cougars of Columbus State 107-102 in overtime on day two of the Barton 45 Second Classic in Wilson, NC. UMO improves to 2-0 on the weekend while Columbus State falls to 1-1.

GAME INFORMATION
The contest concluded day two of the Barton College 45 Second Classic for both UMO and CSU. The Trojans won both games to win the Classic.

INSIDE THE SCORE
UMO got on the scoreboard first following a layup from Matthias Caver, 11 seconds into the game. The teams kept the score close throughout the first half with neither team collecting more than a three-point lead in the opening ten minutes of play. A three-point jumper by Jeremiah Phifer with 9:40 on the clock gave the Trojans a 20-15 lead before the Cougars closed it back to three on a layup 20-seconds later. CSU's layup spurred a 14-5 run putting the Cougars ahead 31-25 until the 4:54 mark when Jonathan Mebane connected on a three-pointer to close the lead to three points. A layup by Darius Spragley and a three by Cameron Robinson gave UMO a 33-32 lead with 3:50 to play before the horn. Columbus State went on a 6-0 run taking a 39-33 lead with under two to play but a Phifer three again closed the lead to three, 39-36 (1:37). A layup by Michael Brown and a three-pointer for the Cougars put the halftime score at 42-38 in favor of CSU. 

Columbus State opened up a seven-point lead, 56-49, following a layup as the clock ticked under 15:30. The Cougars lead extended to ten points at the 10:38 mark as the score sat at 66-56. Mount Olive kicked it into gear closing the gap to one-point, trailing 73-72, following a 16-7 run over five minutes. UMO tied the score at 77 all at the 4:04 mark on an Alan Treakle layup and proceeded to take the lead 82-79 on a Treakle three with the clock ticking under three to play in regulation. Brown converted a free throw with 15 seconds to play to take an 89-86 lead but Columbus State's Givans hit a clutch three to tie the game and force overtime.

The Trojans took a quick five-point lead to begin the overtime period on a Michael Brown three-pointer and a Jonathan Mebane dunk. CSU countered with a three closing the score to 94-92 but Mebane connected a three giving UMO a 97-92 lead with 2:46 to play. The Cougars closed the gap to one point, trailing 97-96, but a three by Treakle followed by a three from Mebane put the Trojans ahead 103-96. Columbus State scored six more points on an and-one opportunity and a three from Bryant but the Trojans connected on four of their six free throws to win in overtime 107-102. 

MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS
The Trojans had six players score in double digits with Jonathan Mebane leading the way with 22 points. Alan Treakle tallied 18 and Jeremiah Phifer put up 14. Michael Brown (13), Matthias Caver (11) and Cameron Robinson (10) also scored 10+ points. Brown led the Trojans with seven assists and shot 6-9 from the free-throw line. Robinson and Treakle both added four assists in the game contributing to the team total of 20 assists. On defense, Mebane tallied a team-high eight rebounds with Caver close behind with seven of his own. 

COLUMBUS STATE LEADERS
The Cougars had two players led the team with 22 points each in Bryant Givens and Anthony Moore. Landrius Horton, Stanley Taylor, and Jalen Thomas all added double-digit performance recording 17, 14, and 12 points respectively. Horton led the boards with 12 rebounds in the game as well as added five assists. Givens led the Cougars with six assists and added four steals. Taylor also recorded four steals. 

KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came in the overtime period when Brown hit a three-pointer and Mebane converted a steal into a dunk to take a 94-89 lead. That five-point advantage was just enough to keep the Trojans ahead of the Cougars the remainder of overtime and help them win 107-102.

UP NEXT
Mount Olive is off for a week before opening their home slate with the 54th Annual Mount Olive Pickle Classic on Nov. 15 and 16. Competing in the two-day classic, in addition to the Trojans, are Barton College, Concord University, and Virginia State University.
