Mount Olive Defeats Young Harris 87-84 In Wilson

WILSON, N.C. – The University of Mount Olive men's basketball team defeated Young Harris College 87-84 in a close battle on day two of the Barton College 45-Second Classic Saturday morning in Wilson, N.C.

How It Happened


  • Despite a short two-point lead, the Trojans trailed the Cougars for the opening five minutes and 20 seconds of the first half.
  • Mount Olive scored on a three-pointer by Cameron Robinson to take the lead, 14-13, that they would hold until the 6:50 mark.
  • Young Harris cut the four-point Mount Olive lead to take control of the score on a layup going up 28-26 with 6:50 to play in the first half.
  • UMO reclaimed the lead and went up by five, 33-28, before YHC came back to tie the game 33 all with less than four minutes to go.
  • The Trojans closed out the first half on a 15-6 run as the two squads entered halftime with the score sitting at 48-39.


  • Mount Olive came out of halftime scoring the opening basket to increase their lead to 11, 50-39.
  • Young Harris went on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to close the UMO lead to three.
  • Tayon Gleaves ended the Trojans scoring drought on a layup before the team called a timeout to regroup leading 52-47.
  • Coming out of the timeout the teams went point for point with UMO holding a slim five-point lead.
  • The Cougars came within two points, 59-57, with 12:21 to play before the Trojans went on a 12-4 run over the next five minutes.
  • YHC cut the UMO lead to six, 71-65, following a pair of baskets to try and start a comeback.
  • Following a Tham jumper at 5:23 the Cougars went on a 5-2 run cutting the Trojan lead to five, 75-70, with less than four and half to play.
  • Over the next three and a half minutes both teams recorded nine points to put the score at 84-79 with 1:08 to go.
  • The Cougars were close to taking the game needing only a three-pointer to tie the game, but a pair of Jamaal Matin free throws gave the Trojans a five-point lead 86-81 with 15 seconds remaining.
  • Young Harris scored just before the buzzer but their efforts fell short as Mount Olive won 87-84 to pick up their first win of the season.



  • The Trojans had six players in double digits against Young Harris.
  • UMO shot 42.1% from behind the arch compared to YHC's 33.3%.
  • Mount Olive tallied 11 more assists than Young Harris and had six less turnovers (18-24) in the game.


The Trojans are off until Friday, Nov. 17, when they open their home slate in the 52nd Mount Olive Pickle Classic. UMO will face the Falcons of Saint Augustine's following the first game of the evening between Barton College versus Virginia Union at 5:30 p.m.
