HICKORY, N.C. --- No. 23 University of Mount Olive Trojans completed the three-game sweep of the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne 14-8 on Saturday at Bears Park in Hickory, N.C.

Records: Mount Olive (6-1) Lenoir-Rhyne (1-6)
Location: Bears Field, Hickory, N.C.

How It Happened

  • Mount Olive opened the game with a groundout, but the Trojans did not let that define the inning as a double by Nate Estes, a walk to Zack Smith, and a second double in the inning by Joe Mason pushed home the game's first run.
  • UMO took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the second when Lenoir-Rhyne answered back with two RBI-singles and a grand slam to take a 7-1 advantage heading into the third.
  • JT Stone drew a one-out walk and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch to kick-start the UMO third.
  • Following a strikeout, Justin Lee connected on a pitch and deposited it into centerfield for a base hit and scored Stone for the only run of the inning.
  • Mount Olive was not left alone in the home run category as Mason helped get UMO to within one with a grand slam of his own making the score 7-6 LRU.
  • A walk to Stone and a hit by pitch to Logan Welch put two more runners on for Mount Olive in the inning and Lee came up once again to push one across as his RBI-single scored Stone to tie the game at seven.
  • UMO took the lead two batters later after an error by the Bears allowed Welch and Lee to score and the Trojans led 9-7.
  • The Bears tried to claw their way back into the game in the sixth with an RBI-double but the one run was all Lenoir-Rhyne scored as Mount Olive went on to add three runs in the seventh and one in the ninth to close out the game.

  • Caleb Irwin (1-0) was credited with the win in relief going six and a third allowing one unearned run off three hits and struck out four Bears.
  • Joe Mason led the team with five RBI going 2-for-4 with two walks at the dish.
