Trojans Fall to Belmont Abbey in Conference Carolinas Championship Match

SUMTER, S.C. – The University of Mount Olive men's tennis team came up short in the Conference Carolinas Championship match on Saturday morning, falling 4-1 to Belmont Abbey at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

Facing the defending champions, Mount Olive battled throughout the lineup, but Belmont Abbey secured its fifth consecutive conference title with the victory.


The Trojans started strong in doubles play, claiming the point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. The duo of Kristoffer Dalbak and Bram Poel earned a 7-5 victory at the top spot, while Luke Oosthuizen and Philip Carstensen matched that scoreline with a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles to give Mount Olive an early 1-0 lead.


In singles action, Belmont Abbey responded by winning four straight matches to clinch the championship. The Crusaders picked up victories at No. 2, No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 singles to secure the deciding points.


Bram Poel fell in straight sets at No. 2 singles, while Niklas Gruenefeldt dropped a tightly contested match at No. 3. At No. 5, Philip Peter Carstensen forced a third set before coming up short, and Hiroma Nishikata battled at No. 6 before Belmont Abbey sealed the match.


Despite the loss, Mount Olive showed resilience against one of the league's top programs and capped off a strong postseason run with an appearance in the conference championship match.


Philip Peter Carstensen and Bram Poel were recognized for their standout performances throughout the tournament, earning All-Tournament Team honors.


The Trojans conclude the season as Conference Carolinas finalists, continuing to build momentum as one of the league's top contenders.
