Ferrum, VA - Mount Olive's doubleheader sweep extends the Trojans' winning streak to five and marks seven wins in their last 10 games. Now 20-16 overall and 12-6 in conference play, they next face UNC Pembroke at home on Saturday, with games at 1:00 and 3:00 PM.
Building on their recent success, in game one, the Trojans set the tone early by putting runners on and forcing Ferrum to defend. That pressure finally broke through in the third inning.
Kynley Brewer, who has been a steady table-setter this season, sparked the rally alongside
McKenzie Millard, who has drawn 18 walks on the year and continues to find ways to get on base.
Emma King followed with another quality at-bat as Mount Olive loaded the bases.
Momentum continued as
Allison Barbour opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to bring in the first run. After an error extended the inning,
Kaylee Cox delivered a clutch two-RBI single for a 3–0 lead by driving in two teammates. The sixth inning saw Mount Olive add two more with clean execution—Millard collected an RBI on a groundout, scoring one, and King's RBI single continued her standout season at the plate by bringing in another run.
Meanwhile, in the circle stood
Alex Steen, the staff's anchor all year. Tossing a complete game, the right-hander allowed just four hits and no earned runs to improve to 10–5. Racking up 113 strikeouts for the season, Steen fanned 10 and maneuvered through trouble, including a bases-loaded jam in the third. Although Ferrum scratched across two unearned runs late, Steen limited the damage and secured the 5–2 win.
Shifting focus to the second contest, a quiet start marked game two before Mount Olive's offense erupted in the fourth inning. After an error allowed a runner to reach base, Brewer laid down a bunt to move the runner up. Millard followed with her own bunt, successfully reaching base and advancing Brewer. King then singled, recording her team-leading 56th hit and driving in Brewer for an RBI that ignited the scoring.
With the offense in full swing, with a double, Barbour drove in two runs. Elizabeth Thome, who now has 23 RBIs this season, added two more by bunting, as her well-placed bunt enabled two teammates to score. Another RBI came from Cox, whose groundout helped Mount Olive total six runs in the inning.
Continuing their dominant performance, Power hitter
Samantha Taylor, with 10 home runs and a .767 slugging percentage, launched a solo shot in the fifth. In the seventh, King delivered an RBI single and Barbour followed with a sacrifice fly, each driving in a run and stretching the lead to 9–0.
On the defensive side in game two, the rest in the circle belonged to
Emma Myatt, who improved to 8–6 this season. Just three walks were allowed in her two-hit shutout, as she kept Ferrum off balance all game. Relying on weak contact and efficiency, Myatt finished with 15 ground ball outs, supporting her solid 3.07 ERA this year.
With both games complete, Mount Olive showcased not only their offensive firepower but also their ability to strike out anyone in the batter's box, demonstrating a well-rounded team performance throughout the doubleheader.
