Mount Olive Opens Home Schedule With Doubleheader Sweep of No. 19 Ranked Lenoir-Rhyne

MOUNT OLIVE – The Mount Olive softball team opened its 2026 home schedule in impressive fashion Sunday afternoon, sweeping Lenoir-Rhyne in a doubleheader with a 4–2 victory in game one followed by a 3–2 win in game two.

The Trojans handed the Bears—who entered the season ranked 19th in the preseason National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Poll, after capturing the 2025 South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Tournament title and making a run to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional—two losses to begin their 2026 campaign.

In game one, Mount Olive used an early offensive surge and a complete-game performance in the circle to secure the 4–2 win. The Trojans scored three runs in the opening frame, highlighted by an RBI triple from Sam Taylor, a run-scoring single from Liz Thome, and a bases-loaded walk by Hadley Womack. Lenoir-Rhyne chipped away with single runs in the second and sixth innings, but Mount Olive responded in the bottom of the sixth when Bri Verme delivered a sacrifice fly to provide an insurance run. Emma Myatt went the distance, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five across seven innings, facing 27 batters to earn her second consecutive win.

The Trojans completed the sweep with a 3–2 victory in game two, relying on power and timely execution. Verme and Thome launched back-to-back home runs in the second inning to give Mount Olive an early advantage. After Lenoir-Rhyne tied the contest with a solo home run in the fifth, the Trojans reclaimed the lead in the sixth as McKenzie Millard advanced and scored on consecutive wild pitches. Alex Steen was dominant in the circle, striking out a season-high 11 while allowing just two runs—one earned—over seven innings to seal the home-opening win.

Mount Olive carries its win streak into the Cougar-Hurricane Classic, hosted by Georgia Southwestern. The Trojans will face Georgia Southwestern on Friday, Feb. 13, at 1:30 p.m., followed by a matchup with Converse at 3:30 p.m.
