Alston Has Career Night as Trojans Fall to the Panthers, 90-85

MOUNT OLIVE — A huge afternoon from freshman Jaevian Alston off the bench kept the Trojans in striking distance, but a late surge from Ferrum handed UMO a 90–85 loss on Saturday inside Kornegay Arena. With the result, the Trojans move to 4–5 overall and 1–1 in Conference Carolinas play.

Mount Olive received a massive lift from sophomore Alston, who delivered 21 points and 11 rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench, going a perfect 10-of-10 at the free-throw line. Alston led a bench unit that outscored Ferrum's reserves 43–11 and was crucial in UMO's second-half push.

After recently earning Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Month honors for his incredible performance in the month of November, Alston keeps showing signs of greatness with his first collegiate double-double and first career 20-point performance.

Jefferson McLamb added 13 points on 3-for-6 shooting from deep, while Matt Kirby finished with 11 points, four assists, and four rebounds. Shane Peterson chipped in seven points and a pair of steals, and Christopher Brown scored six with two assists.

The Trojans trailed by 10 at halftime after Ferrum shot nearly 53 percent in the opening period, but UMO responded with energy after the break, cutting a 16-point deficit down to three behind a 17–6 run fueled by Alston, McLamb, and Peterson.

Coming into halftime, McLamb was on fire knocking down three three-pointers in a span of a minute and a half to cut into the Panthers lead. Mount Olive shot 40 percent from three in the second half and forced 14 Ferrum turnovers overall, converting those into 25 points.

Ferrum, however, held on late behind a game-high 28 points from Gerren Jones and 18 from Abdulh Diaby. The Panthers' efficiency at the free-throw line (24-of-28) proved decisive in the final two minutes as they kept the Trojans at arm's length.

Mount Olive finished the contest shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 75.9 percent at the line while winning the fastbreak battle 16–5 and scoring 40 points in the paint.

The Trojans will look to rebound next week as Conference Carolinas play continues on the road against North Greenville in Tigerville, S.C. on Saturday, Dec. 13 for a 3 pm tip off.
