EAST STROUSBURG, Pa. – The University of Mount Olive wrestling team opened its season with a strong showing across multiple weight classes, highlighted by John Domencic's runner-up finish at heavyweight, Jack MacKiernan's third-place performance at 184, and Raife Smart and Slade Watkins each earning fourth place finishes to round out an impressive day of competition for the Trojans.

At 285 pounds, Domencic led the way for Mount Olive with a dominant run to the finals. He earned a technical fall over Brady Comerford (Lincoln Memorial), followed by a pin and major decision to reach the championship bout. Domencic fell in the title match but secured second place overall after finishing 4-1 on the day.

In the 184-pound bracket, MacKiernan battled through a loaded field to place third, earning a technical fall, a pin, and two decision victories. He outlasted Alexander Dorce (Felician) in sudden victory to close his tournament with a strong finish.

Also at 184 pounds, Smart delivered a steady effort, finishing fourth behind three decision victories and a dominant technical fall to start his tournament run.

At heavyweight, Watkins joined the podium with a fourth-place finish, pinning Phillip Pritchard (Sussex) and collecting two close decision wins before falling in the consolation final.

Elsewhere, Nathan Hampton (197 lbs) and Wyatt Goff (184 lbs) each delivered multiple wins, including pins and bonus-point victories, while Logan Tortual (141 lbs) and Christian Orozco (157 lbs) each tallied several technical falls to highlight strong early-season efforts.

In total, Mount Olive wrestlers combined for 11 pins and 15 technical falls throughout the tournament, showcasing a high-powered offense across the lineup in the team's opening outing. 

Mount Olive took a fourth-place team finish in the ESU Open, following USMAPS/Army Prep, East Stroudsburg, and Pittsburgh-Johnstown.

The Trojans take a week off before competing in the Pembroke Open, hosted by UNC Pembroke on Sunday, Nov. 9.
