PEMBROKE, N.C. (Jan. 24) – In a highly anticipated league dual, the Trojans battled to the final bout in a narrow 20-19 loss at No. 19 UNC Pembroke on Friday night in Conference Carolinas action.

With the loss, the University of Mount Olive men's wrestling team falls to 8-3 overall while suffering its first conference loss to stand at 5-1 this season. Tonight marked the closest dual in the series between UMO and UNCP, but the Brave remain 5-0 all-time. Meanwhile, UNC Pembroke improves to 8-5 this season with a 6-1 record in league duals.

In the 125-weight class, redshirt junior Christian Decatur battled out of an early deficit to secure a 10-6 decision over Joseph Bruscino, 3-0. The Braves countered with a dominant victory at 133 before freshman Benjamin Hernandez was awarded six points following an injury in the first round against Avery Buonocore, 9-5. UNC Pembroke responded with back-to-back victories with a 20-4 tech fall at 149 and a last-second 7-4 decision in the 157-weight class, 13-9. Freshman Brent Nicolosi (165) answered with a 19-9 major decision over Aspen Talbot to tie the match at 13-13. UNCP regained the advantage with a 6-4 decision at 174, but UMO tied it again with a 4-1 sudden victory by junior Calan Staub versus Quintez Shipman in the 184-weight class. Sophomore Raife Smart captured the lead for UMO after battling to a 4-1 sudden victory against Christopher Dickey, 19-16. In the heavyweight match, UNCP earned a 13-2 major decision to escape with a 20-19 win over the Trojans on Friday night.

UMO will continue Conference Carolinas action on Saturday, Feb. 1 with a tri-meet against Limestone and Coker in Gaffney, S.C.
