NEWBERRY, S.C. (Feb. 8) – In the final dual of the Conference Carolinas regular season, the University of Mount Olive men's wrestling team suffered a 37-9 loss at Newberry on Thursday night.
With the loss, the Trojans close the regular season with an 11-3 overall record and a 6-3 mark in league duals. Mount Olive finishes third in the Conference Carolinas East Division standings, while UNC Pembroke and Newberry will represent the division at the Men's Wrestling Championship. Meanwhile, the Wolves conclude the season at 9-6 overall with a 5-1 record in conference duals.
Newberry secured the initial two matches of the competition with a tech fall at 125 before producing a fall in the 133-weight class to build an 11-0 advantage. Senior
Hayden Waddell answered back with a first-period fall over JP Gamez at 141 before the Wolves escaped with a narrow 7-6 decision in the 149-weight class. Junior
Jake Nicolosi closed the gap to 14-9 following a 12-6 decision against Keagan Judd.
The Wolves closed the match with five straight victories, including a pair of close wins at 165 and 174 before recording a tech fall and two pins, 37-9.
Mount Olive is idle for nearly a month before returning to the mat on Saturday, March 2, for the NCAA Super Region II Championships in Greenwood, South Carolina.
