INDIANAPOLIS (Dec. 14) – The University of Mount Olive men's wrestling team competed at the 45th Midwest Classic on Saturday and advanced a trio of individuals to day two of the event hosted by UIndy.
The Trojans featured eight entries in a possible 10 weight classes and registered nine victories on the opening day in one of the toughest regular-season tournaments in the Circle City. The Nicolosi brothers, Jake and Brent, went undefeated and remained in the championship bracket entering Sunday, while junior
Calan Staub battles to reach the podium through the consolation bracket. It marks the most wrestlers Mount Olive has advanced to the second day of the event.
Senior
Jake Nicolosi received an opening-round bye before producing a 12-2 major decision against Cade Johnson of Kentucky Wesleyan while competing in the 157-weight class. He battled to a 4-1 sudden victory versus Cooper Warshel of Pitt-Johnstown to seal his spot on day two of the competition.
In the 165-weight class, freshman
Brent Nicolosi garnered a first-round bye before posting a 9-6 decision over Levi Deaguero of Adam State. He advanced to day two of the competition after defeating Kaden Renner of UMary by a 23-7 tech fall.
Staub posted a 2-1 record on the opening day and dropped into the consolation after suffering a 16-1 tech fall loss to No. 5 ranked Garrett Wells of Central Oklahoma at 184. He answered with an 18-2 tech fall against Callan Ivy of Quincy before registering a fall over Mason Diel of Colorado School of Mines.
J. Nicolosi, B. Nicolosi, and Staub are scheduled to return to the mat tomorrow, Sunday, Dec. 15, at the Midwest Classic with the competition continuing at 9:30 a.m. ET.
