Cooney named to NFCA all-region team

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 11) – University of Mount Olive junior outfielder Courtlynn Cooney was announced as a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) first-team all-region honoree on Wednesday afternoon.

Cooney claims the all-region accolade at outfielder from the NFCA for a third-straight season while earning first-team status for a consecutive year. The 5-foot-5 junior produced another stellar campaign for the Trojans and set the single-season program record after hitting .503 (73-for-145) as the leadoff hitter. Her batting average ranks fourth in NCAA Division II and paces the Conference Carolinas. Cooney finished with 23-multi hit performances, including eight games with at least three hits, while recording a 24-game hitting streak during the season. She also led the league with 36 stolen bases and ranked among the top-five in hits (73) and slugging percentage (.545).

A native of Maryland, Cooney was one of 150 student-athletes named to the 2023 Tucci/NFCA Division II Player of the Year watchlist and received her third-straight nod to the All-Conference Carolinas First-Team. She was also voted the All-Defensive Team by the conference in center field after tallying 65 putouts and a .973 fielding percentage.

NFCA member head coaches from each respective region nominated their student-athletes and voted for the teams. All the honorees are now eligible for selection to the 2023 NFCA Division II All-America squads. Cooney was one of seven players from the Conference Carolinas named to the all-region teams.
