MOUNT OLIVE (March 25) – In its third match of this week, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis team captured its fifth-straight win by defeating No. 47 ranked Belmont Abbey on Saturday afternoon at John Neal Walker Tennis Center.
With the win, UMO improves to 4-0 in conference action and 8-9 overall this season. Meanwhile, Belmont Abbey, who opened league action with two wins, drops to 2-1 and 11-6.
The Trojans took the doubles point by collecting victories in two sessions. In the first position, senior
Liza Voloshyna and junior
Nele Weber captured a 6-1 win against Kaitlin Nguyen and Elizabeth Vollmin, while senior
Ingrid Montserrat and freshman
Oriana Izarra overcame Kayla Vaughan and Lily Aranyos with a count of 6-4 in second doubles. In the third slot, junior
Jessica Aylward and freshman
Laura Servien fell to Alexis Burkhalter and Frankee Hendricks by a 6-4 margin.
In singles play, UMO sealed the team win with three successful matches. In No. 1 singles, Montserrat battled down Vaughan 6-4, 7-5, before Voloshyna was dealt a 6-2, 6-2 loss by Hendricks in second singles. In third position, Izarra replied with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Nguyen, before Weber defeated Vollmin 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the match. In the fifth spot, Servien dropped to Burkhalter in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, while Aylward suffered a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 loss against Elliot Peterson.
Mount Olive will face Erskine in its next match on Friday, March 31, at 2:00 p.m. at John Neal Walker Tennis Center.
