No. 50 Mount Olive downs Belmont Abbey, 4-3

UMO knocks off defending-league champions; Oliveria wins third-straight singles match at No. 1 slot

MOUNT OLIVE (March 25) – In a rematch of the 2022 Conference Carolinas Final, the No. 50-ranked University of Mount Olive men's tennis program took revenge on Belmont Abbey after defeating the Crusaders by a 4-3 margin on Friday afternoon at John Neal Walker Tennis Center.

With the win, the Trojans capture their third league win this week a improve to 3-1 in conference action and 9-5 this year. Meanwhile, Belmont Abbey drops to 1-2 and 11-17.

UMO swept the doubles point by winning all three sessions. In first doubles, junior Guilherme Zotin de Oliveira and freshman Daniel Hammond collected a 6-4 win against Xaveam Van Wijk and Alex Turner, before juniors Adam Ibrahim and Diego Ortega Cadahia defeated Chase Martin and Nicolas Scheller with a score of 6-3 in second doubles. In the third position, sophomore Elios Briand and freshman Bram Poel registered a 6-3 win over Nelson Stafford and Andres Golindano.

Mount Olive sealed the team win with three victories in singles play. In the first position, de Oliveira overcame Van Wijk in three sets with a count of 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), before Hammond followed suit with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Stafford in second singles. In No. 3 singles, Ibrahim dropped 6-4, 6-3 to Charlie Fremaux. In the fourth spot, senior Israel Rodriguez Rojas tallied a 6-0, 1-6, 6-1 win versus Turner, which clinched the match. In fifth position, freshman Kabir Chhabria suffered a 6-3, 6-4 loss against Golindano, before Poel fell to Kai Lloveras in three sets 7-6 (7-0), 2-6, 1-0 (10-4).

The Trojans will return to action for a non-conference match against North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday, April 1, at 2:00 p.m. at John Neal Walker Tennis Center.
