FLORENCE, S.C. (Feb. 3) – In the opening match of the spring slate, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis team suffered a 4-0 loss against Newberry at the City of Florence Invitational on Friday night.
With the loss, the Trojans fall to 0-3 overall in dual matches with all losses coming against programs that advanced to the regional finals last season. It marked the second meeting between the two sides this year after previously meeting during the fall campaign. Meanwhile, the Wolves improve to 4-0 this year with all wins coming against Conference Carolinas opponents.
Due to the format of the tournament and restrictions due to court conditions, the singles matches were played first, and the double points would only be played if necessary.
The Wolves clinched the match victory by posting four wins in the singles session. Senior
Ingrid Montserrat battled in a 7-5, 4-6, 2-6 loss in the first position against No. 27 nationally ranked Zulay Castaneda. In the second slot, senior
Liza Voloshyna fell in straight sets 6-1-6-1 to Nastassia Chamoun before freshman
Laura Servien suffered a 6-1, 6-1 loss against Aina Miralles in the fifth singles. Junior
Jessica Aylward was dealt a 6-2, 6-2 defeat versus Rosie Harfield in the sixth position. Freshman
Oriana Izarra and junior
Nele Weber both had their matches unfinished due to Newberry securing enough points to win the dual.
Mount Olive is scheduled for two dual matches tomorrow, Feb. 4, at the City of Florence Invitational versus Bluefield State and an opponent that is to be determined. The season-opening tournament resumes at 11 a.m.
