INDIANAPOLIS (Dec. 16) – The University of Mount Olive men's wrestling team returned to the 44th Midwest Classic this weekend, as redshirt sophomore Dallas Wilson for a consecutive year advanced to day two after posting a 3-1 record in the 149-weight class.

The Trojans featured an entry in nine of the possible 10 weight classes and registered an impressive 17 victories on the opening day of the mega-tournament hosted in the Circle City. Mount Olive currently sits tied for 29th out of 51 teams in attendance. In total, 70 ranked wrestlers were within this year's bracket, with the No. 1-ranked individual at 133, 141, 149, and 165 all making appearances.

In the 149-weight division, Wilson registered a 9-2 decision over Joey Semerad of McKendree in the opening round of the championship bracket. He followed up with a 15-0 tech fall against Nolan Daerr of Seton Hill before posting a first-round win via fall versus Luke Peterson of Southwest Minnesota State. In the quarterfinals of the championship bracket, Wilson suffered a narrow 7-5 decision loss to the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the country, Wyatt Turnquist of Northern State. He enters the consolation bracket tomorrow and a victory guarantees a top-eight finish at the event.

Redshirt Timothy Decatur produced a 3-2 mark in the 133-weight class and started the competition with an impressive 17-5 major decision over Peter Rolle of Central Oklahoma. In the following match, he secured a 9-4 decision against Maximus Shore of Tiffin before suffering a 10-1 loss via major decision to the No. 1 ranked wrestler in Division II at 133, Gavin Quiocho of Glenville State. Decatur responded with a 4-1 decision over Oran Huff of Colorado Mesa in the consolation bracket but fell by pin to Ryan Ripplinger of McKendree.

In the 141-weight class, redshirt sophomore Taylor Robinson also registered a 3-2 record and tallied a pair of wins by decision in the opening two rounds of the championship bracket. He posted a 5-2 decision over Drew Bell of Fort Hays State before defeating Denim Torgerson of Colorado Mesa by a 9-6 decision. In the third round, Robinson was pinned by No. 1 ranked Zackary Donathan of Tiffin, but answered with a 10-3 decision against Ali Alicea of Kutztown. He lost via fall in the next round of the consolation bracket to Caleb Chaves of Gannon.

Redshirt freshman Devon Bell posted a 3-2 mark in the 197-weight class with three victories in the consolation bracket. Following an opening-round bye, he suffered a loss by an 8-2 decision to No. 8 ranked Dakoda Rodgers of Pitt-Johnstown. Bell responded with a 14-2 major decision against Devan Gauldin of Glenville State before defeating Brooks Schrimsher of Ouachita Baptist by an 18-3 tech fall. He followed up with a 13-8 decision over Cameron Lopez of Upper Iowa but fell by an 8-5 decision to Isaiah Huus of Minnesota State Moorhead.

In the 174-weight division, sophomore Calan Staub registered a 3-2 record and opened the event with a 4-1 decision over Jaxon Randall of Central Oklahoma. In the next round, he delivered a 9-6 decision versus David Davis of Tiffin before suffering a 19-3 tech fall defeat to No. 6  ranked John Joll of rival UNC Pembroke. Staub answered back with a 19-3 tech fall over Chris Mapp of Newman before suffering a loss via a 14-9 decision to Cole Hivnor of Gannon.

Junior Jake Nicolosi produced a 2-2 mark at the Midwest Classic on Saturday. He recorded a second-round fall over Sean Smith of Kutztown before defeating Caden Jacobs of Grand Valley State by a 10-2 major decision. Nicolosi suffered a loss by a 5-1 decision to No. 8 ranked Drew Wiechers of Ashland before suffering a defeat in the consolation bracket by a 5-3 decision to Nico Carrasco of Adams State.

Wilson is scheduled to return to the mat tomorrow, Sunday, Dec. 17, at the Midwest Classic with the competition beginning at 10 a.m. ET.
