NEWBERRY, S.C. (Oct. 8) – In the first dual match competition of the fall season, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis suffered a 5-2 loss at Newberry in a non-conference match at Oakland Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Trojans open dual match play with an 0-1 record after playing in a trio of individual competitions to start the 2022-23 campaign. Meanwhile, the Wolves improve to 1-0 overall after posting a 24-5 record last season and making it to the NCAA Southeast Regional Final.
Mount Olive claimed the doubles points after winning a pair of matches in the session. At the first slot, senior
Liza Voloshyna and junior
Nele Weber were dealt a 6-1 loss by Zulay Castaneda and Nastassia Chamoun. Senior
Ingrid Montserrat and freshman
Oriana Izarra earned a 7-6 (7-5) victory in the second position over Rosie Hartfield and Sofia Cardenas. In third doubles, junior
Jessica Aylward and
Laura Servien claimed a 6-4 win over Ish Singh and Aina Mirailes Lopez.
Newberry won five of the six singles matches to secure the victory on Saturday. Montserrat suffered a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Castaneda, who made it to the semifinals at the ITA Southeast Regionals this season, at the first slot and Voloshyna was handed a 7-5, 6-0 defeat in second singles by Chamoun. Izarra dropped a 7-6, 6-3 decision versus Cardenas at the third position, while Weber secured a 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory over Singh in fourth singles. Servien fell by a 6-1, 6-4 count at the fifth slot against Mirailes Lopez and freshman
Lea Edelstein dropped a 6-3, 6-3 match to Hartfield at the sixth position.
The Trojans are idle for two weeks before closing out the fall season on Oct. 23rd with a dual match against Charleston (WV) in Raleigh, North Carolina.
