Trojans Split Doubleheader Against UNC Pembroke

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Trojans softball returned to action Thursday afternoon in a doubleheader against UNC Pembroke. The Trojans split the doubleheader, dropping the first game, 9-6, and winning the second, 12-3. 

GAME ONE INFORMATION
Game one saw Hailey Kessinger in the circle for the Trojans. In the top of the first the Braves' Rendi Wetherington earned a walk, getting on base to begin the game. Wetherington then stole second. With two outs, the runner attempted her second steal of the inning but was gunned down by Ashlyn Porter at third base for the final out of the top of the first. The top of the second inning saw the Braves get on the board first with a solo home run. In the bottom of the second inning Cana Shrock and Ashlyn Porter got on base via the walk. With two outs Megan Bryant ripped a double to center field, scoring both and giving the Trojans a 2-1 lead.In the third inning Wetherington would send a shot over the left field fence taking back the lead for the Braves 3-2. With another runner on base, and one out, Tatum Brummitt sent a SAC fly to center field, scoring one more run and extending the Braves lead to 4-2. 

In the bottom of the fourth inning Ashlyn Porter showed that the Trojans can hit home runs too, sending a ball over the left field wall, cutting the deficit to just one, 4-3. The Braves got one runner on base to begin the fifth inning. Two batters later a single down the right field lane would score the runner making the lead 5-3 Braves. The next at bat was another homerun for the Braves, extending their lead to 7-3. In the seventh inning the Braves scored two more insurance runs, extending their lead to 9-4. The Trojans scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but ultimately came up short, 9-6. 

TROJANS LEADERS
Cana Shrock collected two RBI on one hit.

BRAVES LEADERS
Rendi Wetherington and Tatum Brummitt each had three RBI.

KEY MOMENT
In the top of the seventh inning with the Trojans only down three runs, the Braves added two, extending their lead to five, 9-4.

GAME TWO INFORMATION
Carrying momentum over from the first game, the Braves scored first in game two. Plating two runs in the first inning, taking the lead 2-0. In the bottom of the second inning the Trojans had the bases loaded. Megan Bryant singled scoring one-run as well as Hannah Burress on the throw home. Emma Mooney grounded out to third base scoring another Trojan. Mooney's at bat was followed by two more Trojans crossing the plate, giving them a 5-2 lead. Taking a two-run lead, 5-3, into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Trojans offense put the game to bed. With two runners on base Kylie Emmanuele singled home Bryant, giving the Trojans a 6-3 lead. Her at bat was followed by Shrock scoring two more with a double down the right field line. Cassandra Lassiter, doing her part to keep the scoring going doubled to right field scoring Shrock and extending the Trojans lead to 9-3. The Trojans scored three more runs, making the score 12-3. In the top of the fifth Mallory Ratcliff sat down the Braves in order, taking the game 12-3.

Emma Mooney, Courtlynn Cooney, and Cana Shrock each had two RBI.

BRAVES LEADERS
Mary Sells had one hit and one RBI.

KEY MOMENT
In the bottom the fourth inning the Trojans scored six runs, taking the lead 12-3.

ON DECK
The Trojans are back in action at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field this Saturday, March 13th, in a doubleheader against Conference Carolinas opponent Belmont Abbey College, at 1/3 pm.
