Softball Team Wraps Up Florida Trip; Drops Pair To No. 19 Rollins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Mount Olive freshman Lauren Smith held regionally 19th-ranked Rollins to just four hits, but the Trojans struggled to manufacture hits of their own and fell to the host Tars 4-3 on a walk-off homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh in game two of a non-conference softball doubleheader Thursday night in Winter Park, Fla. In the opener, the Trojans managed just tow hits in an 8-0 defeat.

The games wrapped up a Spring Break road trip that saw the Trojans play eight games in four days against some of the best programs in Florida.

In game two, Mount Olive (11-9) was searching for its first hit when Christie Wright got things started with two outs and nobody on in the top of the fourth. Wright and teammate Tiffany Hawley walked, then  Jennifer Jones singled to load the bases for Rebekah McDaniel. McDaniel doubled two bring home two runs, then Ragan Taylor singled for a 3-0 advantage.

Mount Olive did not seriously threaten again against Rollins pitcher Amye McIntyre.

With Smith cruising through the Tar line-up, three runs appeared to be enough. Smith walked two and struck out three through five innings. Then Rollins (14-3) came to life. Aimee Halpin delivered the Tars' first hit to lead off the bottom of the sixth. A walk later, Monica Meadows singled to load the bases with no outs.

Hope Bitzer walked to force in a run, then one batter later, Lawna Hunter was hit by a pitch to cut the lead to 3-2. Smith escaped the frame with the lead thanks to an infield pop-out and a fielder's choice.

In the bottom of the seventh, Halpin singled with one out and was still stationed at first with two outs when Meadows slammed her second home run of the night to end the game.

In the opener, Meadows' solo homer in the fourth capped off Rollins' 8-0 win. Bitzer held the Trojans to just two hits, a second inning double by Wright and a third inning triple by Danielle Mitchell in getting the win.

The Trojans return home for their first contest at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in 10 days when Catawba travels to Mount Olive Tuesday for a doubleheader. First pitch is 2 p.m.
