Lauren Smith Shuts Down Eckerd For 4th Straight Shutout

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Mount Olive freshman pitcher Lauren Smith hurled her fourth consecutive shutout and eight different batters recorded at least one hit as the Trojans earned a doubleheader split with Eckerd College 12-0 Monday night in the first of four consecutive days of games against teams from the state of Florida. In the opener, Christie Wright delivered a pair of hits and an RBI, but host Eckerd rallied for two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to end Mount Olive's six-game winning streak 6-2.

Smith (7-1) allowed just a pair of hits to the Tritons, both coming in the second inning. A lead-off hit by Alex Sasso was followed by a Jessica Sudler double. Kristen Schurr walked to load the bases with no outs, but Eckerd failed to score as Smith got a strikeout, a fielder's choice grounder and another strikeout to end the threat. Eckerd had only one more batter reach base.

Mount Olive (11-3) got all the offense it needed in the top of the first. Katie Moore singled home Elizabeth Overman who doubled, then Robbin Kennedy singled and Rebekah McDaniel walked to load the bases for Christie Wright, who singled to left for a 2-0 lead. An Anna Munizza RBI-single stretched the lead to 3-0.

The Trojans travel to St. Leo, Fla. Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. against St. Leo College.

An inning later, the Trojans took advantage of three Triton errors to stretch the lead to 7-0. Mount Olive mounted the rally with only one hit, a Moore single with one out. Kennedy added a sacrifice fly in the frame.

In the third, Danielle Mitchell scored on an error to start the inning then finished it with an RBI-single for a 12-0 cushion. In between McDaniel drew a bases-loaded walk and Wright singled home a run.

In the opener, Mount Olive scored twice in the top of the first on Kennedy's single and a Triton error. Wright followed one out later with an RBI-single.

The Trojans threatened for more but stranded eight base-runners in the contest. Mount Olive loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but Eckerd reliever Alex Sasso retired the final two batters to end the threat.
