Ty Wallace posted a third straight career-breaking rebound performance with 15 rebounds, as the University of Mount defeated rival Barton College 69-62 in Conference Carolinas women's basketball in Wilson, N.C.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early five point lead but four unanswered points by Katie Paschal brought the Trojans back to within striking distance. Barton led for most of the first half as their led never got higher than the early five point margin.
Mount Olive (11-7 Overall, 6-4 Conference Carolinas) took an eight point lead into halftime by eight going on an 8-2 run to end the half.
Going into the second half the University of Mount Olive utilized another 8-2 run with contributions from three players to extend their lead to its largest of the game at 16, as the Trojans led 40-24 with 16:37 to go.
Barton (8-10, 5-5) fought back as they went on a quick 6-0 run of their own to bring the game back to 10 with 12:44 remaining.
The rivalry was shown as with 5:25 to go the Bulldogs ignited an 11-0 offensive outburst, which lasted just over two minutes, to bring the Trojan lead down to two and the crowd really got into the game making it a tough environment to play in. After two Trojan free throws, Ashley Thornton drained a three-point basket with 2:41 left and made it a one point game 61-60.
Jasmine McDonald silenced the crowd with back-to-back lay-ups for Mount Olive to give them a five point cushion, however Brianna Thomas got her jumper to fall to bring the game back to three with just :47 left. Joneiqua Gary was fouled twice and went 4-for-4 from the line to put the game out of reach for the final time.
The win for Mount Olive marks the second time in three years that the Trojans have walked out of Wilson Gymnasium with a win. The University of Mount Olive is on a three-game winning streak going back to their last home victory over Lees-McRae.
Paschal led the quartet of Trojan players who had double figures with 19 points. Wallace's career night was capped with her third double-double of the season. She had 10 points to go along with the 15 rebounds. Gary finished off with 13 points. McDonald came within one board of recording her seventh double-double on the year, posting 10 points and nine rebounds.
Nyeshea Willie led all scorers for Barton College with 21 points in the contest. Tiffany Webster also had 16 points.
Mount Olive returns to action Saturday evening for the 31st Annual University of Mount Olive Basketball Church Night as the Trojans play host to North Greenville in a Conference Carolinas men's and women's basketball doubleheader. Church groups throughout Eastern North Carolina are invited and general admission tickets are available for $1 per person. The women's game tips off at 5 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
